It’s a fact that lots of popular videogames (both japanese and western ones) get anime adaptions. And since anime and videogames are two of my favourite hobbies (after all, japanese videogames and anime shares lots of elements from each other) I decided to make a list with anime based on videogames. I have a tumblr blog for that reason where along with the list (which I update often every time a new anime based on video game is released or when I discover an old one I didn't knew it existed) I make posts to talk about these kind of anime. anime-based-on-video-games.tumblr.com/post/104359491120/anime-based-on-video-gamesIn this list they are not included visual novels and eroge games like Da Capo, Utawarerumono and Clannad, multi-francises like //hack, virtual toy games like Digimon (for those who don’t know, Digimon started as a virtual toy game like Tamagotchi aimed for boys) and trading card arcade games (like Monster Retsuden Oreca Battle). Mahjong video games series like Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai are ok. If there are any anime which are not included on the list, you spotted some errors or you have any recommendations in order to improve the list please send me a message at tumblr in order to make the proper modifications. Keep in mind that not all anime have traditional 2D style (like Pokemon): some of them are 3D (like Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children), some of them use claymation (like Taiko no Tatsujin)…the visual style varies from anime to anime but most of them are 2D so don’t worry. Speaking about Pokemon anime, since it’s a long-running series I posted one tag only.

Your next job is to watch every last one of them to determine which are horrible abominations, and which are merely insufferable. Best get to it! ;D

Don't worry, I have watched lots of them. That's how I got the inspirationg for this thread after all. ;D As about which ones are horribles and which not is a matter of taste. For example, Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer has negative reviews but personally I like it a lot. Nineties fighting/ecchi anime to its best. But...you can ask me about any anime you're interested in and if I have seen it I can tell you my opinion in few words. Speaking for which, I want to see Salamander one of these days.

There was an anime for Dungeon Fighter Online not long ago called Slap Up Party: Arad Senki.

There was a "Power Dolls" anime based on the strategy game by Kogado (despite being released by Megatech, it's not Hentai/Eroge).
Cool idea for a thread!

Ah, Megatech. I wish they were still around. I remember trying to get Knights of Xentar to work on my computer when I was a freshman in high school.

Usually can't stand anime but there's exceptions to every rule. Coincidentally the only two I ever did like happened to be based on videogames. Those two being Gungrave and Wild Arms.
I like Gungrave the most since it just seemed like an animated mobster movie most of the time. Sure it's no Goodfellas or anything but for the most part I felt it actually deserved to take itself seriously. And when they got to covering the events of the game it didn't seem to out of the blue. Pretty neat stuff.
Wild Arms on the other hand is the exact opposite. It has a plot that it tries to keep intact but for the most part is a goofy and often hilarious romp and doesn't worry about being too serious. Most of the time.

Gungrave was really surprisingly good, but I think it would have been a lot better without the characters mutating into fucking video game bosses and going insane, and without BRANDON HEAT coming back in such a ridiculous costume. When Bob Poundmax grew a helicopter rotor out of his back and started flying around while shooting exploding skulls out of his corpulence, my respect for that series dropped quite a bit. It fortunately still had a good ending, and overall, I really thought it was great, but they could have done without the awful boss rush bullshit.

The way I see that series is the Part before He becomes Grave it its own series. It could of begin worse at if the Final level of the game it was based on was in the Anime now that would feel out of place. I do not hate the ending though but Kinda wish they would of made a series based off the Second game as well.

On the other hand, her synopsis just sold me on this anime.

Slap Up Party and Power Dolls added to the list. Thank you guys! I was right to make this list on this forum. It would be nice if this thread was a sticky one since there's a sticky thread for anime reviews.

On the other hand, her synopsis just sold me on this anime. I was just being an ass, anyways. I need to watch this one, too.

I was always quite fond of the Sonic OVA. Man, Sonic needs to be more of an asshole again.
