The pre-reboot version of Prey always sounded like an awesome Quake-killer. Also still a bit disappointed that the Nintendo 64DD never arrived here, and by consequence, we never got Mario Artist.

Fear. Effect. INFERNO. Words can't convey the sadness. Rumor has it that it was canceled because it got rated AO.

Desert Bus Not that I'd actually want to play it to completion or anything, I just like the idea, in a strange, sadistic way. The entire collection in Smoke and Mirrors is pretty good, even though Penn and Teller usually tick me off.

Sonic X-Treme. Yes, it looked incredibly weird, but it looked... interesting, to say the least, and it would have been really awesome to just see one 3D Sonic game before he, *cough* changed. Cancelled because Yugi Naka is an engine-hogging dick. Thrill Kill. Basically 4-player Mortal Kombat, and maybe I'm just jaded by all the violent games there's been recently, but it doesn't seem THAT much more violent than most MKs to me. I still think it's an incredibly fun game, and yet another of EA's many, MANY old mistakes. Also, this guy has a TON of beta and unreleased game videos. I seriously recommend you check him out, if you're into that. www.youtube.com/user/monokoma

Contra Spirits 64 - Apparently it was being developed by KCE Osaka. It makes me wonder whether it would've been as good as the N64 Goemon games or as mediocre as Castlevania 64. I heard there was a GameCube version in development as well. Donkey Kong Plus - I know technically this became Mario vs. Donkey Kong, but I preferred the bitmapped sprites they were going to use instead of the pre-rendered crap in MvDK. media.gameboy.ign.com/media/482/482128/imgs_1.htmlLost Warld - Hideo Kojima's very first project. Advertised, but never released. Apparently, it may had just been an earlier prototype of Metal Gear. RE1.5 - The original version of RE2 with Elza Walker. There's also the three or so prototypes of RE4

Wing Commander 2 (SNES). One of my favorite PC space "sim" (well it was at the time, I guess!) games and apparently the SNES port was pretty darn good (judging by a review in Gamepro). Until DOSbox matured, the PC version was completely unplayable for years and it would have been nice to have been able to fall back on the SNES version. Plus, I spent a lot of time getting used to playing Wing Commander with the SNES controller when I only had a Tandy 1000TX for my home computer. Such a waste to let that awesome dexterity only be used on the first game and the expansion pack Hired Guns (PC) - So basically like Jagged Alliance mixed with Space Hulk but with the Unreal engine? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP. X-Com: Alliance (PC) - X-Com universe + Unreal engine + FPS + not Enforcer + Canceled? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Anachronox 2 (Xbox/PC) - This is a double loss, because not only did it tell the second half of an extremely awesome storyline, but that it was being pitched in conjunction with a bid to release Anachronox on the Xbox (which would have helped secure funding in making the second game). Sadly, the PC version didn't sell well enough and Daikatana's massive failure completely killed Ion Storm Austin. Rock (PC) - Singletrac's space sim + mech sim + fps looked fucked AWESOME in Computer Gaming World's Nov 99 preview. Studio shut down before it was finished then reformed to make the most excellent flight action / vehicle action / fps action multiplayer game "Warhawk" on PS3. ( pg1, pg2) Outcast 2 (PC) - Ok, so it came to light long after the fact that the tech demos were all smoke and mirrors, that the game was going to be completely different from the original and that there was some seriously shady shit going on behind the scenes...but god damn...Outcast is one of the best. games. ever. Easily. Duke Nukem Forever (PC) - Fuck the haters, this game looked awesome in every preview that was ever released. The cancellation of it brought a tear to my eye and the leaked footage of the final builds blew my fucking mind. Urban Decay (PC) - ellipsoid-based, urban police action adventure from Andrew Spencer Studios (you know, the guys behind Ecstatica 1 and 2). Extremely violent with some degree of freedom in how you took down enemies that had a wide rage of reactions to various wounds. Oh, and really, really bloody. The Indestructibles (PC) - Bullfrog's open ended super hero game where you created your own super hero and brought justice to a massive 3d city. Far more ambitious and demanding than was possible to be made back in 1995, but go figure, it was being designed by Peter Molyneux... Guardians: Agents of Justice (PC) - X-Com-style gameplay with fucking superheroes from the developers of fucking Masters of Orion. You can't tell me that it wasn't going to fucking own. ( pg1, pg2) Starcraft: Ghost - Third person stealth action game from the developers of Metal Arms: Glitch in the System? Yes, please. I could probably go on and on about all of the canceled games I mourn the loss of. ---edited to add some links to magazine scans and stuff---

Well you can always just play Wu-Tang Shaolin Style, it used the same engine. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks cel-shaded HOTD3 looked amazing. I've actually always wanted a Resident Evil FPS game that looked like that. Kore on Wii is probably gonna end up unreleased. Damn shame.

I love reading about unreleased/beta stuff for games, and while I can't exactly say I have a favorite, the Lost Levels forums have a shit-ton more info than the main site does, and you can read it all without registering. I check back almost daily just to see what's new and exciting. Definitely worth a look if you're into anything like this at all.

I got to play Starcraft Ghost at an E3 a few years back, after Swingin' Ape had been put to work on it. Mostly felt like a more action-y Splinter Cell with a hot chick instead of Sam Fisher. Didn't seem like anything revelatory but it would've been nice to see released. Had I know it would be eventually canceled, I would've trudged through the lines some more, but even professionals at trade shows have no concept of the crowds that form behind them.

Didn't seem like anything revelatory but it would've been nice to see released. That's pretty much why it was killed off. It was good, but it wasn't great. Had it been developed now a days (post-Activision merger), I'm sure it wouldn't have been canceled.
