 A Eulogy to Classicgaming.com
« Thread Started on May 30, 2009, 1:57pm »

This isn't quite game-related, but it is site related, so I'm posting it here. I'll probably post it on the main page too, eventually -
---

I guess no one really knows about it because there haven't been any posts on Kotaku about it, but IGN/Gamespy is shutting down all of their public hosting services. For me, I know at the least that means that Classicgaming is going to be gone - I'd imagine that would include Strategyplanet, RPGPlanet, and numerous other genre areas that included hosted fan sites.

I'm not sure of the history behind these, but let's talk about Classicgaming, a bit, along with the history of my own sites. Classicgaming.com was started by Kevin Bown, AKA
Fragmaster, a then-employee of Gamespy, as well as the man behind SomethingAwful's Fireman Comics and co-star of Doom House (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeBjr8Bm_wA) started up a free hosting service for fan sites. I had been running The Castlevania Dungeon for about a year, with most of its files hosted on Geocities. Back in the day, they only allowed for 2 megs (2 megs!) of space, so it was split across multiple accounts donated by friends, along with a few Tripod accounts for music files. Then Deuce, webmaster of the Ninja Gaiden Homepage, pointed me towards the newly formed Classicgaming, and we, along with the Metroid Database, SHMUPS, and a handful of others became some of the first members. Since then, Gamespy's hosting has become more expansive, offering dozens of fan sites on Classicgaming, and scores more on other themed services.

And as of August 31, 2009, they will all be deleted.

That's kind of depressing. I mean, my own sites and several others will be hopping about Kontek.net, which already hosts a few other swell sites like The Mushroom Kingdom and Bonk Zonk Compendium, but how many of us will make the jump? How many will simply vanish, saved only by the rather arbitrary algorithms of Archive.org and the few people who actually save web sites to their hard drives, perhaps to charitably archive them later ala The GIA? I was pretty struck by the fact that Geocities would be deleting all of its sites, although that mostly meant the disappearance of pages that had been inactive (and mostly irrelevant) for ages. But Gamespy hosted a ton of excellent stuff, and to potentially see them disappear would be disheartening.

How are fan sites going to flourish with all of these free hosting services? The fact that it didn't cost any money was the reason most people started these up. I certainly didn't have any cash to pay for domains or hosting back when I started up The Castlevania Dungeon when I was 15. Those that have been around long enough, or are confident in the investment, can still pay for their own domain or webspace, but for newbies? Nowadays, all there are are Livejournals, Facebooks and Blogspots to waste people's times.

I hate blogs. They serve their purpose, but their structure is almost offensive. It seems to say that the only relevent information is whatever is happening at that moment, and then it falls into nothing within a few days. Sure, they have search functions and tags, but hey! Good luck with those, especially if you're looking for information on a specific game. There's a reason that HG101 lists all of its articles right on the front page - so none of them dwindle into irrelevance as time goes on. It does present some problems, since articles tend to age, as site standards change or new games get released or discovered, but I'd rather that than the alternative. To make a parallel, blogs are like magazines, which are relevant for a month and then discarded. Web sites are like books, better cataloged, more permanent.

Or, at least, they were. Now we're still going to have the professional sites forever, or until they go bankrupt (whichever comes first), and they serve their purpose, but the big draw of the Internet is where the general populace can come together to have their voices heard. That's slowly going away, and it really kinda sucks.

What? This is terrible!

At least there's until the end of August to set up alternative sites and backup material....

Is anyone working to coordinate site migrations?

Coordinate? Certainly nothing on IGN/Gamespy's end. Their suggestions for new hosting include a link to Google.

http://hosting.ign.com/faq.php

I should note that this is technically due to a switch in servers, which is incompatible with whatever they're using to host other sites. And they figure it would be too expensive/time consuming to make it compatible, so they're just hitting the delete button. Still, I can't help but imagine that if the internet ad market weren't as depressed as it is, then they'd probably find it worthwhile to make the change. But it is, so they're not.

I can't be too mad. Businesses are business, and what the hand giveth, the hand can taketh away, or whatever.

I'm not sure when my sites are going to make the move, I have to edit several hundred HTML pages to remove/update ad code.

You just have the three sites, right? The Dungeon, Contra HQ and HG101? Have you heard if Deuce is going to make the switch, as well? Finally, do you need any kind of assistance with making the switch? I'm sure you have plans of some sort, but there's a strong community built up around at least this place and the Dungeon. There are probably a lot of people willing to pitch in with whatever you might need.

I don't suppose anyone knows a more up-to-date way to get in touch with the webmaster(s) of Streets of Rage Online? I'm guessing the email address on their front page is not likely to be checked anymore. It's not been updated in four years and it's not, well, that great a site, but I feel sorry for it so if nothing else, i'll fire up HTTrack Website Copier next time i'm on highspeed and see about backing up the place.

Man, that's shitty news. :/

Does this mean FilePlanet's going bye-bye, too? And do you know where your sites are going, Kurt? A new free hosting service or maybe even their own domains?

This is pretty awful news. I can't really blame them for it, since they're a business, not a charity, but it still sucks.

I hate the way that so much of what made the internet fun and interesting is disappearing. Back in the nineties, there were so many free hosting services that there were all kinds of interesting websites, whether it just be pages for fan art, shrines, or what have you. Granted, there was a lot of crap too, since most of the people making use of free hosting services were just teenagers. Nevertheless, it was always great when you found that wonderful gem of a site, and over the years they've slowly been disappearing.

In it's place? Now all we get are twitters of what somebody is doing at the moment and myspace/facebook/whatever blogs that nobody gives a damn about. The old practice of building a personal website, even if it was simply a small one, to show your enthusiasm and passion for something has been gradually vanishing in favor of what amounts to a glorified text messaging service.

Incidentally, while we're talking about Classicgaming... I remember a nice site dedicated to the original Final Fantasy that I would swear used to be hosted on Classicgaming a number of years back. It was a damn nice site, but I can't seem to find it anymore. I'm not sure if it even exists anymore outside of maybe being archived somewhere. The problem is that I can't remember exactly what it was called any more. Does anybody happen to know what the name of the site was, and if an archive of it remains somewhere? It would be a shame if it has disappeared forever.

I'll be damned. That Final Fantasy site really is missing. Wonder when that happened?

I remember that place. If I recall, Kurt use to have a link to it on the Dungeon. But it's not there now. Perhaps the site no longer exists?

Anyway, this news is rather depressing. I'm glad to see that HG101 is going to be spared, but it does make me wonder if I need to archive some of the other sites. I use to visit Shmups all the time, and it was there that I was introduced to several great games that I otherwise would have never known existed. Even though I haven't been there in a while, it would be a big shame to see it disappear.

I'm kind of torn on whether or not I like the modern internet better than the internet of the 90's. I too sort of miss the days of getting free web hosting accounts (back before free web hosting totally sucked) and tinkering around with HTML code. There were plenty of awesome fan sites back then. But what I don't miss is having to endlessly search Altavista (which yielded more porn sites than sites that were relevant to what you typed in the search bar) and then going to sites that are full of nothing but broken links. Nowadays, I can easily find plenty of information on Wikipedia, look for videos on YouTube, and download large files with BitTorrent. I think the internet has become more useful due to innovations, but it has sort of lost some of its original charm.

Also, I'm completely out of the loop when it comes to MySpace/Facebook/Twitter, etc. I've never been to any of those sites and I really don't care to go. But I think there are plenty of alternative sources of information on the modern internet, so it's pretty easy to ignore all the shitty stuff.

It's kind of scary how many LJ accounts have been left to wither away due to Facebook. My poor Geocities site was destroyed in the great cleansing, but that was probably for the best.

This is upsetting news, but not unexpected. I'm the most upset with sites that haven't been updated in years and that might fall into the wayside.

Some sites have already made the change over like SOA World and NESp. I'm sure the bigger sites will definitely get moved like Metroid Database and NinDB, but so many haven't been updated and would be sad to see them go.

The Battletoads page doesn't seem to even care about moving to a different place which is worse!

I use both Livejournal and Facebook pretty extensively. Tried out Twitter, but can't really get into it. And Myspace just plain sucks.

It seems kind of pointless to use LJ and Facebook at the same time. Facebook seems to have a better sense of connection with your friends, as well. It's sad, cause I've had my LJ for around seven years now. Oh well. Onward and upward.
