I've been meaning to create this thread for quite a while now. I'll never be able to make something wholesome like the Korean History article out of it, and as I don't know any Chinese, most stuff I know is through the Korean filter, which still used to be a thousand times larger than the English one. I'll mostly stick to old PC games, but there's also a ton of unlicensed console games, maybe other users can show us a few interesting ones there. I'm planning to post a game I've played and a screenshots-only one with each update, but first I'd like to draw attention to the Super A'Can, Taiwan's exclusive 16-bit console. There's been some talk about it on various English sites, but I don't think I've seen it mentioned here (but we all know how useful proboards' search function is). Released in 1995, it seems like it was about as capable as the SNES, but there were only 12 games released for it. (I think I've also seen a thread on assemblergames about unreleased prototypes? I'm not quite sure.) More info and pictures: www.videogameconsolelibrary.com/pg90-funtech.htmweb.archive.org/web/20080321202222/http://www.vanillaicemedia.com/acan/acan.htm

That looks very similar to ffv to me. The colors, some of the tiles. And I can't tell, but is that an eyes-wide-open surprise face?

Back UP dat ASSSS! That picture of the player character exploding in the CABAL-like game is kind of messed up. Seriously though I'm looking forward to hearing more about Taiwanese games (my wife's family is from there, although she really doesn't give a shit about her heritage since she's lived in the US her whole life).

I've got Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan (All Men Are Brothers: Wind And Cloud Biography) & Yang Jia Jiang (Generals of the Yang Clan) for the megadrive, the bootleg beat'em ups. I think both based on old chinese novels/stories (Or maybe All Men Are Brothers is based on the Shaw movie of the same name, since that is an adaption The Water Margin? But I don't recognize anything from the movie in the game).
Still want that Dark Judgement game (the belt scroll one).
A Taiwanese mate of mine recommended me Flame Dragon series, a Taiwanese Shining Force clone series.
Managed to find all games in the series on the net, but I still have to try it out.
Flame Dragon 2: Legend of Golden Castle
Flame Dragon Plus: Marks of Wind
And of course there is IGS keeping the Taiwanese Arcade scene alive.
--- Someone asked about martial arts RPG's, well stumbled on this title while looking for Flame Dragon on youtube (same dev), The Fighting Blast (rips SNK sprites though):

Last Hero in China was an arcade game, correct?

I like the look of that, any idea on how it plays?
While I can't contribute much to the genres already covered I've got Chinese RPGs up to the eyeballs, would anyone be interested in seeing a few of those?

水滸傳梁山英雄 The Liang-Shan heros of Water-Shore Biography (Panda, 1996) Since the screenshots from the above link are rather fuzzy, here are some more It's another belt scroller, for up to three players simultaneusly. As you can see the art is gorgeous. It runs in DOS high resolution mode, but doesn't fill the entire screen (except for the story screens in between stages), so I guess this might be a port from an arcade game? Controls are really good for a PC brawler, standard 2-button layout (attack, jump, press both for a special move). It seems there are super moves as well (note the small bar above the characters' health), but I didn't manage to execute one. I don't know why the Panda logo says copyright 1997 in the link, in the Korean version I've used it's 1996. While I can't contribute much to the genres already covered I've got Chinese RPGs up to the eyeballs, would anyone be interested in seeing a few of those? Sure. I'm planning to post some myself, eventually. I've got 笑傲江湖, 神雕俠侶 and a bunch of old DOS games.

Any links allowed here, as in Korean game marathon? I ask because I found Liang-Shan Heroes at some Chinese forum, and I'm willing to share it.

That one could be a bit critical, as Super Fighter Team might have the rights to it, and every once in a while they re-release a game. I'd prefer limiting the public links to stuff that's in legal limbo indefinitely (that's why I removed the link to Lars the Wanderer after I learned that it belongs to Gravity and there's a mobile version of the game).
