I dunno whether this deserves its own thread or not but here we go!
I recently got one of the new 360 play 'n charge controllers and I am in love with it. It fixes everything wrong with the original 360 controller and then some.
There are a few differences from the standard controller, mostly (but not limited to) the d-pad. If you look closely you can see that the sticks are also a bit different from the normal ones. They're much rougher than the regular sticks and provide much better grip. Instead of having the four 'dots' on either stick, this controller has a circular ridge that goes all the way around the pad. They also seem to glide a little better, but that might be because I'm so used to using my old controller.
The matte silver finish is beautiful and soft, very nice to hold on to. I am a bit wary of it staining or being scratched but I've had it for about 3 weeks now and it's been quite durable.
On to the d-pad, obviously the focus of this post. The normal 360 controller's d-pad is basically a fake analog stick with a pad on top, a constant source of frustration for any game that requires digital input (fighting games, primarily) or uses the d-pad for quickly switching targets (RESONANCE OF FATE. ) This controller replaces that d-pad for this one, which can switch between 4-directional and 8-directional depending on your preference.
It's hard to tell quite how it works from the pictures, but the pad is actually a tall cylinder that sits deep within the controller. It's similar to the original pad in that it's really more like a stick than a legit d-pad, but the length of the shaft allows for fairly precise control and a nice clicky feel to its inputs. The pad itself is nice and glossy chrome and the entire controller just looks awesome.
Also note that the face buttons are monochrome, which is kind of strange but does give the controller a nice sleek appearance rather than looking like a Fischer-Price toy.
I highly recommend picking one of these up if you get the chance.
