Way back in my youth back in my elementary school days we had Apple II computers at my school. There were a number of games used for teaching and fun that I remember like Word/Math Munchers, Mathblasters and various Super Breakout clones. But of all of them I recall the one that was the most fun was The Oregon Trail. While educational it was very entertaining. You pretty much play out (from what I remember) a family in the 1800's traveling from the east coast of the U.S. to the west one on what's called the Oregon Trail. You had to buy supplies and equipment and food for the tough journey ahead as the game was very unpredictable and anything could happen. But of all the things in the game the best was the hunting mini-game which was very fun though brief. I long to play the game again but I don't know what emulator to use and where to get it along with the ROM. Over the years there have been other games of the series but I assume most of them are lousy shovel ware stuff.

I loved Oregon Trail. We only had brief periods in which it was available, since my school upgraded from Apple ][s to Win 95 computers in pretty short order after I began attending, but I learned to type on one of those big yellow boxes and played Oregon Trail and Number Munchers at every opportunity. I mostly liked shooting stuff in the hunting minigame.

I find it kinda neat how the modern cellphone/handheld version of Oregon Trail uses a hunting minigame that's at least superficially closer to the old Apple version than the PC version.
Can't wait for that on 3DS. I have it on my phone, but the sound is annoying.

Obligatory picture: Can't wait for that on 3DS. I have it on my phone, but the sound is annoying. Hmm, didn't realize it was on 3DS. I couldn't find any reviews of it. Any word on how it is?

I mostly liked shooting stuff in the hunting minigame. As did everyone.

Hmm, didn't realize it was on 3DS. I couldn't find any reviews of it. Any word on how it is? ...Holy crap it's a retail title? I thought it was an eShop port of the cellphone version. I haven't played it yet - the cellphone version was fun, though I haven't logged a lot of time on it. Pretty simplified, mind. Your party gets a hunger gauge; the wagon gets a repair gauge. Lots of fun little random events and minigames for hunting, fishing, and even river crossing. Nothing replaces the Win 3.1 version in my heart, of course, but it's a pleasant little successor - not as good as Oregon Trail 2, but much more fun than 3 and onward.

BTW, I was reading about Oregon Trail on Wikipedia a while back and found out about this game (I hope I didn't already post this...if so, sorry!): www.mobygames.com/game/apple2/freedom/screenshotsImages 5, 8, 9 and 11 are all pretty WTF. I don't know, what do you think? On one hand it's kind of offensive, but apparently it got pulled from the market because some bitch got butthurt and claimed her 12 yo son had nightmares about being a slave. Wah. Wah. Grow the fuck up, kid.

Oregon Trail was awesome. My favorite part was the shooting section where you go hunting. Nothing beats killing a buck or a bear and feeding your family for a few days.
I played the game back before I could read and just had my parents/aunt/adult read what happened for me. Whenever I got to the river, I would think that the ferry was actually a fairy and that there were elements of fantasy in the game. I guess that’s why I wasn’t so surprised when Amazon Trail got weird and started including time travel. I also played Africa and Yukon Trail somewhere along the line, but I didn’t like those as much as Oregon and Amazon Trail.

Am I the only one who always preferred the sexier DOS/Macintosh 2nd Edition of the game? They had it back on the old Macs at elementary school, and it was either that or Gizmos and Gadgets with that dickwipe Morty Mischief. DUN. DUN DUN. ...Wait, they made a version on the DSi? Really? I'm morbidly curious now.

I think that's the version I played. That image looks all too familiar.

Didn't they make a version for XBLA? Presumably it is the same as the Wii/3DS version. Another nifty online version is The Thule Trail. Googling is left as an exercise to the reader.

I don't know what Apple version it was exactly, but I played Oregon Trail a lot on this black & white Mac computer in my 3rd/4th grade classroom in 1998-2000 or so. I think it was an older computer since it was in black & white, though I'm not certain how old exactly. I know the hunting minigame was a first-person shooting gallery kind of thing. I really liked it a lot though, and it was my first experience with the game. My family also has a version of the game in color, which is probably that DOS version whose screenshot has been posted higher up in this thread. And then the emulated Apple II version I've played online with a friend of mine a few times before.
I'm not interested in the newer versions of Oregon Trail though. Maybe they aren't that bad, but from what I know about them I just kind of doubt I'd be into them.
