Akella was supposed to localize all four PC games as far as I know. Guess the first two didn`t sell enough.

How available are these games? I would not mind owning them.
I have no knowledge of Russian whatsoever, but the language barrier doesn't seem too fierce to me.

I wonder what the chances are of someone taking these and making an english translation patch from them.

I used to see them a lot in videogame stores a few years ago, but I don`t know how available they are now. These games were budget releases and came out in standard jewel cases. And as is often the case with releases of this nature, the "packaging" is absolutely awful.

Hey! This is Mym, the person responsible for the screenies. ^^ Sorry for the bump, but a friend and I have joked about starting a translation group for a while, and recently it kind of got out of hand. :'D And being a massive Sakura Taisen fangirl, when we were knocking around ideas for initial projects, my mind immediately jumped to the series. Long story short, a day's messing with the PC port of the first game and taking technical pointers from the already translated Russian version, and... um... this happened. We're talking seriously early days here being that we only began mucking around today, but in theory, at least, we seem to have Sakura Taisen running English scripts. ^^ I don't really know a lot about the English language fanbase for the series, and I remembered that cj had kindly posted my screenshots of the Russian version here, so I figured it might be a nice place to gauge interest in a potential translation project. Honestly if everything continues to go to plan technically I'll probably just translate it as a labour of love anyway, but encouragement never hurt, so... um... Would people like to see an English version of the game? Would people want to play it if we translated it? Hope this sort of stuff isn't illegal here, but I saw other people mentioning potential translations further up the thread, so... :'D

YES. A MILLION TIMES YES. We already began preliminary work to do it ourselves, so uh, consider that you beat us to the punch. Collaboration, maybe?

Oh, man, this is awesome. I did want to play these. I have the Saturn versions of these first two.
Tried to see if I could get the PC versions to run on my laptop and I had issues with the intro cutscene playing, though; always crashed the game.

I heard the earlier Sakura Taisen games had PC ports long ago but I'd never have imagined they could have made it outside Japan in some way! That now there is a chance to play them in English in future is wonderful.
Also, seeing these localizations, one has to wonder if the Russian gaming scene has some other "hidden gems"...

Thanks for all the support! Right now I'm aiming to knock together a quick test translation of the first chapter by the end of the week, as that ought to give a good indication of whether or not it's feasible and what problems we'll face if we decide to go ahead with it. At the moment we're still sort of puzzling out things, and are inserting text by quite a clumsy means (manual line breaks, limited space for messages, and all that good stuff that official translators of videogames in the 90s had to suffer through :'D), but so far the chances of producing a working patch are looking pretty good. And I'm super-excited. ^^ A couple of screenshots of said test translation, if you're interested: imageshack.us/g/24/saku12.jpg/YES. A MILLION TIMES YES. We already began preliminary work to do it ourselves, so uh, consider that you beat us to the punch. Collaboration, maybe? Aww, sorry for jumping the gun. I wasn't sure if your group would go ahead with it any time soon, and it's a game that's very dear to my heart. ^^ Since it's kind of a dream project for me, I'd rather be a bit selfish and translate it myself if that's okay with you. :'D But help would always be welcome in proofreading / testing. And also with the technical side of things. While I'm comfortable with translating, neither my friend nor I are hugely savvy with romhacking-y stuff, and we've come as far as we have basically through trial and error. It'd be great to have somebody more knowledgeable to turn to if we hit any serious roadblocks.
