The Burning crater of Darvaza is an abandoned mine located in the Karakum desert. The mine was abandoned after it started to leak natural gas some years ago. Since the escaping gases are toxic, it was decided that the mine should be set on fire to burn the gas and prevent it from spreading. This may have been an incredibly stupid move, because the supply of natural gas in the mine truned out to be damn near endless. Consequently, the mine has continued to burn 24 hours each day, 365 days per year. And it's still burning to this day. The end result: A giant perpetually burning hole in the ground, right smack dab in the middle of a desert. Seriously, imagine how terrifying it would be to come across something like this while traveling through the desert. It's like something taken straight out of a horror-fantasy story. Just check it out for yourself: Burning crater of Darvaza in Turkmenistan

Kinda like that mine in America where there is a constant underground fire, the Silent Hill movie kinda bsed some of it's plot around that.

Yeah, Centralia, PA. Though it doesn't look as bad as that.
This is the sort of thing I wouldn't want to go to without wearing at least a Gravity Suit.
