www.hardcoregaming101.net/exile/exile.htmThe crazy-ass action-RPG published by Telenet, also known as XZR. The games we know as Exile and Exile: Wicked Phenomenon are actually the second and third games of the series - the first was computer only. Plus, the console versions of Exile had a lot of stuff hacked out, including a portion where you travel to the present day. There was a lot of this in the first XZR, including a section where you must assassinate the president of the USA and Secretary of Russia. It's based off Islam history (very loosely) and has some real historical figures tossed in for good measure. In other words, it's total madness.

Great article. I vaguely remember trying out XZR II on MSX2 as a kid, but had no idea back then what kind of game I was playing. I would change every "MSX" to "MSX2" in the article, though, since the MSX versions of XZR and XZR II are MSX2 games.

Nice, any info on the PC98 version of XZR II compared to the PC88 version?

I made reference to the NEC and MSX2 versions of XZR 2, implying that the NEC PC88 and NEC PC98 versions were identical. They can be regarded as the exact same game, since it's the usual PC88=PC98 port job. Playing both I can't see any difference at all. But thanks for pointing that out, since it's obviously not clear in the text. Good point about the MSX and MSX2 as well.

Not the British space-sim For a second there I thought you were confusing it with Elite. I hadn't even heard of that Exile before. The first thing I thought of is the trilogy of action RPGs that Spiderweb Software has absurdly been selling forever. www.spiderwebsoftware.com/productsOld.html

I thought this was about Exile, the old bbc/c64/amiga action adventure. Man it is a great game, oh well i'm looking forward to reading this Telenet Exile article too.

I dont think I ever would of been grabbed by this series if it werent the change from top view traditional RPG to sidescrolling hack n slash. I played both the Turbo Grafx games and I honestly dont ever remember if I beat Wicked Phenomenon. I know I got very far into it. It was all about knowing which character to use for a particular level. Funny how the music between both Turbo games were vastly different in genre. Wicked Phenomenon had the more traditional middle eastern music although for some reason I digged the techno/hip hop music of Exile 2. Still the whole middle eastern setting of the games made them unique at the time they were released. The article mentions that the US version of Wicked Phenomenon was near impossible to beat. I'm almost tempted to see if I can do it.
