So I've been playing Shining in the Darkness a ton for a couple days and now I'm grinding for the final boss. But a couple weird things have happened: I couldn't get the Princess to shed her tears until I got right up to Dark Sol's front door, or perhaps the trigger was getting the Light Armor. But according to the internet, just reaching the fifth floor should have been the trigger. Is that wrong?
Here's the weirder thing. Before getting the tears and the blessing from the goddess, I was able to enter Sol's lair. Pressing A at the angel gate turned it into an impassable wall but pressing forward pushed me right on through. Is that supposed to happen? I'm playing on the latest Genesis collection FWIW. Maybe that's normal and he just would have eaten my lunch if I tried fighting him? I just reloaded when it happened because I wasn't ready for the fight.

I've got one more question for the time being. I've heard that the GBA remake of Shining Force added a bunch of content but made the game much easier. I like the idea of more content but I really want a challenge in my games. Am I better off playing the Genesis version first then the GBA version for a replay down the road? 1upsuper Both of the things in your spoiler tag are normal. Gotcha, thanks!

So, I played a bit of Captain Toad, the 3DS version. Seems to be a nice little game but I sadly lost interest after only an hour. Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. There’s really nothing wrong with the game but you kinda feel like you’ve seen everything you needed to see, and your time is better spent elsewhere. I love this game and completed it on Wii U and Switch. The game is super uniform like many Mario games (you will fight bosses again but with new twists) but the actual puzzles and situations mix it up later half of the game. Some of these bonus challenges in every stage is really hard too, transforms the objectives of some stages. Ok I decided to keep going after all and I can’t deny that this is really fun. And way more varied than I gave it credit for. I’m replaying all of the earlier levels now to collect the pixel toads! When I think about it, the Captain Toad gameplay formula would work really well in a Zelda themed puzzle game. Each level is basically already a bite-sized mini dungeon, so I’d love to see Link (or Zelda) collecting keys, special items (hookshots, bottles, bows etcetera) and a master key in every level.

Downwell is awesome! Although the "last fight" could be messy, if you aren't prepared with the right upgrades. I also liked the idea of unlockables. Too bad that some palettes can create seizures. I mean, virtual console red palette is not really sweet for the eyes.

I used the christmas time and played Earth Defense Force 5 with my sister. It surely got a phantom release, because it was digital only. I mean, you mostly find Koreans and japanese people in the online mode.
Lots of people claim that EDF 5 is an improvement, but I have mixed feelings about the game. Most of the new enemy types are "kinda" reskins of old opponents. EDF 4 had a white mothership, but EDF 5 had a gold/brownish mothership with the same form. Instead of moonwalker robots, you have frogs. If you are more of the gundam type, then you will surely miss some enemy types.
They changed a few things regarding the classes. Air Raider got good stuff in the beginning and not only in the last quarter of the game. Wing Diver was heavily weakened. You now need good cores, if you want to fly for a long time or if you want a better energy consumption and all of her plasma weapons were weakened. I haven't played Fencer yet, but Ranger surely got some vehicles from the Air Raider. I don't mind these changes. My only concern are the missions. Lots of them feel like EDF 4. They haven't created more unique missions. I mean, they added 2-3 stealth missions, which is cool, but the game has more than 100 missions and some of them are really similar to EDF 4. For example, after every round, a dragon wave is falling from the sky in a particular mission, which is exactly the same one mission from EDF 4. You also have too long tunnel missions with a similar structure to the previous game. They reused some maps. Since, they introduced a Godzilla enemy in EDF 4. I thought, they would try to add a 2 headed King Ghidorah or even a giant butterfly, but they haven't added that many insects in this game. In that area, it is kinda wasted potential. The maps are kinda samey. Some of them look european, which is new, but they don't have unique buildings or something similar.
The dialogues in the game are as weird as in the previous game. It has the usual B Sci-Fi movie vibes.
"It’s not a world war.. it’s a SPACE war!” "Giant insects are falling from the sky" "oh my god, they killed George!"
I am a bit surprised that gaming sites haven't attacked the game. In the japanese version, the aliens are called immigrants. The Wind Divers (which are female only class) show more skin, especially in the lower area of the body and some of them have lines that would make feminists very angry. This also exist in the english version.
In the end, it is more of the same.
Yours sincerely

Would you say it's a good starting place to get into the series? I've been curious about EDF for a while but haven't tried it yet. It sounds like some of your issues might not be pertinent to a new player. The weird sexist elements are lame though.

Yes, EDF 5 is much fairer than the previous entry. The story is almost nonexistent and just a parody of various things. Even, if you don't like your current class, you still farm armor from other classes (to a certain degree) as well as their weapons, thus it is friendly to change classes. In comparison to the 4th game, you are kinda forced to start from mission 1, because you don't have strong weapons for the harder missions and you could only farm weapons from your playing class. They made EDF 5 friendlier. The quality of weapons depends on mission and difficulty. For example, you can only farm lvl 80 weapons and above in the highest difficulty. In normal difficulty, you can only get max lvl 30 weapons and it is impossible to get lvl 40 weapons. Don't be surprised, if online mode is harder than offline mode, because the enemies will have more HP, if more people are participating in a stage/mission.
Yours sincerely

I'm keeping an eye out for price drops on WiiU. While the WiiU didn't do great, it did get several games that I'd really like to play, as well as being fully backwards compatible with Wii. (to my knowledge)

I'm keeping an eye out for price drops on WiiU. While the WiiU didn't do great, it did get several games that I'd really like to play, as well as being fully backwards compatible with Wii. (to my knowledge) A warning that you still need the original wiimote or wii classic controllers to play many of those old Wii games. Many of them cannot be played or started using the Wii U Gamepad controls, unless they were re-released digitally specifically for the Wii U in the eshop. You cannot, for instance, play Skyward Sword using the Wii U gamepad controller. You need to still have those old Wiimotes and nunchucks. As far as Virtual Console for NES/SNES/etc, you can only use the Wii U gamepad for games specifically released for the Wii U. Unfortunately the Wii U VC library is far far far more limited compared to the Wii's VC library of retro games. So if you wanted to play a Wii VC game off-tv and on the Wii U gamepad screen (Wii U's biggest selling point), you have to plop the Gamepad on some stand and use a Wii controller to play it, which is rather annoying

I technically finished Nier: Automata, but only the A Route. As by Yoko Taro standards, most of the overarching story won't be pieced together until all endings are gotten. In case of Automata that's A-D I think, since the game actually has 26, one for each letter of the alphabet, though beyond the first four or so it's just glorified early Game Overs.
Certainly really beaten is God Medicine, an RPG by Konami (remember when they made those? me neither) for the GB. It's fun and entertaining, pretty standard when the gameplay is concerned, but a neat condensed fix for the little RPG hunger with a semi-interesting setting - the kids have to travel between our real world and the virtual one of a game to foil some alien's plan.

I played Until Dawn and did pretty poorly, with most of the characters getting killed.
Oh well, I'm going to try again.
