Completed Act II of Dragon Quest XI yesterday. I had dropped the game after getting bored with it last year early in Act II but reading a few posts about it and wanting a classic turn based game made me give it another shot. My poor opinion of most of the sound-track still stands and the game is definitely too easy on base difficulty, but I did enjoy the story and Akira Toriyama artwork. DQXI maintains that classic RPG feel I only get from 90s games. Act II ends the story in a nice place too. Not sure how much of Act III I'll play as the boredom is setting in again and Zooming around the same locations gets monotonous. Sidenote: Mia from Dragon Quest XI looks an awful lot like Kid from Chrono Cross. Costume design is almost identical. Given the connection between Chrono Trigger's Schala (a Toriyama design) and Cross's Kid (different designer) this looks like a neat homage. Too much to be coincidence right? A new Chrono game with Toriyama designs would be so awesome... Pictures of the three for reference (Mia from DQXI, Kid from Chrono Cross, and Schala from Chrono Trigger)

Any recommendations for character builds for the Hero and Erik in DQXI? Anything will work, with good strategy. For me, I went with dual-wielding swords for Hero and and dual-knives for Erik. Definitely build up Erik, because he'll become invaluable at eliminating King Metal Slimes.

Pretty certain the collection will be split in two in some way like with the original and X Mega Man ones.

I’m thinking of picking up Control, which looks really good. Unsure if I’m gonna like the combat though. It looks kinda hectic... I think I might pass on the MMZ/ZX collection. The Zero games in particular were too hard for me I have the DS collection anyway if I’m tempted to try again. I actually finished the first ZX though, and found it pretty challenging at times but not impossible. Lol, I feel like I’m getting worse and worse at video games with every passing year. I’m always looking for relaxing games with little to no challenge, or at least the option to level up and become an absolute tank as soon as possible

The DS collection and the upcoming one have an Easy Scenario mode where you start up fully powered. Zero games in general have a kind of an inverted difficulty curve, where you start off as very weak but finding and using the Cyber Elves makes you completely overpowered by the end. Get through the first few levels and they get considerably easier (unless you're going for the S Ranks).

All the Zero games need to be fair is to not have permanent effect Cyber Elves permanently count against your rank. That's the single cruelest thing in all the games where your rank is actually important. I used to like them, but I've turned against them over the years. Part of it is because the story in what I think of the "Inti branch" of the timeline is kinda dumb. After finally playing through X6 to X8, the direction the story went in those games is actually a little more interesting although X7 is on the weak side (to say nothing about the abominable gameplay). I'll still probably pick these up for ZX and Advent since I only played those once. The trailer only says PS4 now, but I'll be incredibly shocked if it doesn't come to Switch. Even if it it doesn't, I wouldn't consider it a huge loss.

I'm heavily weighing toward picking up the Zero/ZX Collection. This series totally passed me by, as a broke college student. Too bad they didn't include the Gameboy Megaman games. It would have been nice to play all the handheld Mega Mans in one shot.

With this announcement, I only just realized how generally indifferent I am towards Mega Man. I don't mean that as a diss towards any of the games or its fans, but more that despite how many games are out there and how often the series has generally been celebrated for all kinds of reasons, I haven't really engaged with any part of it enough to say anything more than that they exist and plenty of people like them. The only MM game I've given more than 10-15 minutes towards was 10, which I've heard is one of the lesser games in the Classic series. I'm sure I played a tiny bit of 4/5 and X1, but I remember sucking hard at them and giving up very quickly. I do like the concept behind the games and how the ability to choose most of the levels in any order encourages multiple playthroughs with different weapons and tactics (in fact, I wrote up a basic concept for a MM game based on Evangelion a few years ago, though heavily bastardized in its visuals to convey the sense of a charmingly barmy 80s game like The Krion Conquest). But I guess something about it just doesn't work for me. The only game I've really wanted to play from the series is Legends, and that's more because it's a 3D game from the fifth gen, which interest the heck out of me. Still, it's really awesome that the Zero/ZX games will be much more easily available to people now, so I'm happy it's a thing and I'm especially happy for the folks looking forward to getting it. I hope it's good!

One day i will figure out why people like Gacha games, i have tried Fate/Grand Order, Fire Emblem Heroes, Dragon Ball:Dokkan Battle and others like Brave Frontier and i never get the love.
The games don't start too bad when you can actually buy or get stuff as they tend to give you just enough to start, particularly during an event, but afterwards everything just seems to slow down and you start losing everything unless you upgrade your characters in various ways with really rare items that are more easily obtainable through money.
Actually, i think that's my problem, the games just become an unbearable grind with really small chances of getting anything useful unless you put a lot of money to it and a lot of the time, the games themselves are not that great, but i know people obsessed with them, and there are games based on franchises i like or with characters i enjoy so i just keep trying and abandoning games, most times in less than a week.

Playing some Valkyria Chronicles 2 lately. It gets a bad rep with VC fans but the nuts and bolts are still there, although with more annoying characters (I know every iteration has misfits but these kids really seem like a bunch of goofballs and brats) and the school setting which is so maligned.
My biggest problem is mostly that it feels like you're doing the same maps over and over, literally. Many of the missions involve you going into an area you went to before but with a different objective.
The lack of large scale maps is disappointing but understandable, and breaking maps up into different pieces is something that you quickly get used to.
I also don't remember VC1 being this grindy. It feels like I'm doing several maps over and over just to get certain credits to promote my troops.
Having said that, I do like that so far, the game tries to encourage the player to use all their troops, if not for the added missions it unlocks but for added backstory. VC1 often tended to have you generally settle on the same core 15 or so troops you use over and over because of how overpowered some were and how there didn't seem to be as much benefit to using benchwarmers to unlock stuff.

I really enjoyed VC2. The story is utter garbage but I really enjoyed the gameplay and the new units really added a lot to the game. It's a lot of fun to play.
But oh my god the story is bad and the characters annoying. The character who is colour blind has the dumbest character arc ever, up there with the bionic commando arm moment.
