GOG is giving away Freespace 2 right now. What a classic! I don't have a joystick though.

Been playing my Sega Genesis Mini since I got it last Thursday. First weekend, I devoted entirely to Strider. Game was alot harder than I remembered it being. Especially, that final area, but I've gotta say the game looks alot nicer than I remembered it as well. Strider's sprite is nice and large, the enemy's look fantastic even if there animations seem overly stiff. I went off looking for the original manga, but it seems it's never been translated for Western audiences despite the main character being a hallmark of Capcom's franchises. Some fan translated about half of it, but I've only managed to find the rest in the original Japanese. Didn't even bother looking for the Gaiden manga chapter.
Starting Sunday, I started playing Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, and Megaman: The Wily Wars every morning. I've beaten the original Sonic enough times where getting 4 emeralds before the third zone is easy peasy. This is my first time playing Ecco the Dolphin and knowing what I'm doing. I faintly recall renting the original cartridge when I was younger, but I don't think I ever got very far. The game is a little tough, mostly because some of the mechanics don't seem to work as well as the game assumes they should. Necessary rocks spawning in the ground; air from some clams not refilling my air supply. Game is fun though, in a really tranquil way. I hear eventually I get to go back in time, so that's something to look forward to.
Megaman: The Wily Wars is a different beast compared to it's original MM bretheren on the NES. Everything takes sooo much more damage, there's a delay in the jumps some times, and I'm not sure how ,but the game manages to feel even more stiff than the originals. Sure does look nice though. I'm assuming the jump in graphics here must've been akin to seeing games in HD for the first time. Friend tried to jump straight into MM2 the other day, (it's the one he has the most experience with), and got destroyed by it. Don't think he even got to his first robot master. I started with the first game yesterday and managed to actually get thru Gutsman, Cutman, Elecman, and Iceman. Platforming is the thing that sucks the most. I shudder just thinking about Iceman's platforming section over an endless pit... Where the platforms shoot at you... While being bombarded by penguins... Who thought that was a good idea?!

Got the first two crystals in Final Fantasy. Really enjoyed the dungeons so far. They're quite a bit easier than the dungeons in the DQ NES games. In fact, the whole game has been so far. My party is absolutely swimming in gold all the time as well. But, it's a 1987 RPG, so I'm sure it'll ramp up soon enough. I am really amazed, though, by how few fucks they gave about people with epilepsy and such things back in the 80's. I mean, I've seen some bad examples, in this very game even, when you cast a spell, but this game takes it comically far. There's literally a screen-filling white flash every other frame the whole time you walk around on damaging tiles. Now, maybe I just have sensitive eyes or something, but I have to close my eyes during those sections because it's just too fucking much! I'm just stunned how there wasn't a single person at Square or any other company in those days that thought to tone it down a little. Certainly you don't have to be epileptic to understand that that shit's just annoying at best and seizure-inducing at worst. Platforming is the thing that sucks the most. I shudder just thinking about Iceman's platforming section over an endless pit... Where the platforms shoot at you... While being bombarded by penguins... Who thought that was a good idea?! Just use the magnet beam. It's just one of those things that sucks too much shit not to cheese. It just ain't worth it. I tend to do the same with the vanishing blocks in Heatman's stage.

Also started on Wily Wars, starting with Mega Man 1. The gameplay mechanics are certainly programmed differently. On one hand, enemy bullets move across the screen slower, giving you more time to dodge. On the other hand, the way bosses take damage makes the fight more drawn out. Usually I'll cut Cutman down to size, but I nearly almost died on full health in Wily Wars. I needed more patience, more strategy, because you can't just wail on him with the mega buster. Seems like the multiple pause/damage glitch doesn't work for the game either. As for the jumping/platforming sections, I haven't had too much trouble yet. But I only played Cutman and Bombman, before trying out the other games on the Genesis Mini.

Viewtiful Joe (GC)
That doppelganger-boss - finally beat him, but it took me a couple of lives. What a cheap bastard!
Anyway, I'm pretty much enjoying revisiting this brawler/platformer-hybrid, viewtiful indeed (even though some of the puzzles can be a bit obtuse).

I remember the last boss being an absolute bitch. And also didn't realise until then that you are immune to fire using the speed up move which is important for that fight.

Thanks for the heads-up. Guess I've got something to *ahem* look forward to then?

It took me a good few hours to beat but sense of achievement when I finally nailed it was exhilarating.
I was playing on adults difficulty and not kids. Found normal a total cake walk so started on the harder difficulty as I wasn't having fun.

Initially I also started the adults-mode and somehow ended up getting my ass kicked by the first boss. Though it was more of a casual run, not yet having a good grasp of how to play the game properly, since the last time I last played it was more than 10 years ago. And I'm not even sure if I fully knew what I was doing back then - never beat the game, that I remember. Nowadays the game clicks with me more, probably because over the years I've gotten a greater appreciation for the finer mechanics in beat'em ups. Good thing I own the second game, too (which I played very little back then), so I've got more VJ-goodness coming.
At the moment I'm fine with kids-difficulty - no shame in that . But yes, up until that boss (and maybe some moments in the stage preceeding it) it was not very difficult, but so far I had fun.

Minit is next week's free game on the Epic Store. That's two now that I purchased during the Lunar Sale that I probably shouldn't have. And Downwell was free on the Google Play store, but I don't think that counts.
If this pattern continues, likely future candidates include Disgaea and Death Road to Canada. Slayaway Camp is probably too obscure.
Syberia 3 was in a Fanatical bundle recently; I really should have anticipated that.

I take back what I said about the Switch DQ games. They are unbelievably ugly.
Why stick high res sprites on top of pixelated backgrounds! And why are the high res sprites so piss poor!

Yeah, it looks really off and is very noticable. I am just happy to be easily able to play them.
Has anyone tried Contra Rogue Corps yet? It seems to be a big trainwreck even though the director/designer of contra 3 and hard corps worked on it. Probably Konami is the one to blame for this? The budget would probably have been low for this game.
I did try the demo, it didn't feel like the worst game ever but also not as Contra. I almost forgot about it already

So Viewtiful Joe definitely has too many instances of emergency countdowns. This is the kind of game where I don't like being pressured by a timer. Just let me experiment, dammit. What's even worse is the constant alert noise - it's so annoying that it makes me turn the volume down.

The problem is that 'Kids' and 'Adult' doesn't really tell you anything about the difficulty, and probably everyone is going to pick Adult because Kids sounds like an easy mode. Whereas in reality, Kids is normal and Adult is hard. I had the opposite problem with REmake, where Hiking and Mountainclimbing are easy and normal respectively and I picked Hiking. And what does mountainclimbing even have to do with a survival horror game? I take back what I said about the Switch DQ games. They are unbelievably ugly. Why stick high res sprites on top of pixelated backgrounds! And why are the high res sprites so piss poor! It's really embarrassing. And I bet it's going to be the first exposure to the games for a lot of people. I wonder what they think of these ports over in Japan. DQ isn't that huge here. Imagine the outrage we'd see online if they decided to treat the Mario games in the same way.
