I dunno, the hooplah over the Series X name seems like much ado about nothing. It never struck me as silly, just another thing for the internet to complain about. I see the same 'it's the Wii U all over again' comment everywhere. It's not going to confuse anybody. If people can keep up with the ridiculous names for the latest smartphones, parse idiotic twitter grammar, or read and understand any YouTube comments section on literally anything game related, then the 'Series X' moniker shouldn't pose a problem at all. If the Xbox fails, it's because it's been on a downward spiral this whole generation... it's been on the cards for a while. On a different note, has anybody finished The Touryst yet? I'd be keen to know what the consensus is - I honestly think it's one of the best games of the year

It's not going to confuse anybody. It's not going to confuse gamers like us, but don't underestimate how poorly informed parents and other 'outsider' groups can be. If the Wii/Wii U and DS/3DS/2DS situations were enough to confuse people, this surely will be too. And even if it wasn't confusing, it's just a bad name, just like how Xbox One is bad. Nintendo overall seem to have a very different view on branding. Sony has Playstation, Microsoft has Xbox. Nintendo on the other hand is all over the place with their naming. Gameboy, Wii, DS, Gamecube, Switch... and then they kill the entire brand and start over. Imagine Sony killing the name ’Playstation’... Nintendo is all gaming, whereas Sony and Microsoft have other things going on. So Playstation and Xbox are more the equivalent of the word Nintendo than, say, the word Switch. I've always felt that Nintendo naming all their systems something else is because they're so different from one another. Look at how much difference there is between their consoles and handhelds since the N64 and then look at Sony and MS's evolution. Sony and MS really are just iterating on the same idea. The Playstation 4 really is just a fourth Playstation. At least the burying of the GameBoy brand was in part accidental due to the popularity of the DS. I remember when the thing was first announced, Nintendo insisted it is a side project and not the proper follow up to the GBA. You know, just in case it flops. But it got so insanely popular that it became their new handheld brand. It's funny that they did the same with the Switch. It was announced as a thing seperate from their handhelds and consoles but ended up replacing both. I think with both the DS and the Switch it was pretty clear that it was always going to replace the GBA/Wii U. Even when the Switch was announced the Wii U was dead.

Ill-informed parents aren't much of a thing any more, at least in my experience. Kids these days demand in exacting, entitled terms. Having worked at a School and having younger family members, parents I know are - on the contrary - all-too well informed. And that's living in a country town, like I do. The masses of today will find the next big thing, regardless of name

Confusing or not, it still begs the question WHY? Why choose a name that is not only very similar but also not catchy, not memorable, not unique, not logical, not fun, just..... strange.
Xbox One was not exactly a frontrunner this past console generation so one would think they’d think long and hard and not settle for something that literally sounds like a placeholder, more so than even ’Scarlett’ did.
But yeah, maybe everything will make sense and fall into place once the console is out and put up against the PS5.

Nintendo has a Switch year in review web app and prepare to be scared or not because I'm 100% sure their numbers are off. ( switch.nintendo.com/year-in-review/) Top 5 Games: Sega Genesis Classics Dragon Quest Builders 2 FE: 3 Houses FF7 Ys VIII Top 3 is definitely right. I have something like 80 hours on SGC with the vast majority from this year mainly from Phantasy Star II-IV and Landstalker. DQB2 was 55 - 60 hours in the play log. FE was 45:56 from the game's timer. Ys VIII should be next though as I spent 39:56 on that. FF7 isn't anywhere close to #4 though. The timer time was significantly different than the play log, 22:03 versus 25 - 30 hours, but FFIX was still comfortably above that with a timer of 32:22. That should be #5 or Oninaki, but I forgot to check the play log time once it showed up. Total Hours: 1151 Total Games: 153 I find both these numbers a little suspect. 1151 is longer than everything I've finished this year put together across every platform. There are some extra hours from puzzle games I never fully finish, but it's still a discrepancy of hundreds of hours! 153 games is suspiciously close to my number of purchases for 2019 which includes subscription payments and free DLC plus the handful of pre-2019 games I did open at least once. I'm not going to put the accumulated gold points, but I double checked and it is scarily accurate. 😬

I hate picross.
I can't play anything on my switch as every time I turn it on I can't decide what to play so go for a quick game of picross. 3 hours later I turn the switch off after playing nothing but picross.

Started two games this weekend. Metroid: Samus Returns and Half-Life. Metroid is great, as you'd expect. The counter mechanic doesn't get on my nerves as much as it did for some people, and the free aiming is nice. I do get cramps in my left hand pretty quickly while playing it. Maybe something to do with holding the L button? Never had that before on the 3DS. Half-Life is interesting so far. I don't think it has aged that well in every regard, but it's always fun to see what's around the corner. The story-telling through the levels is great, but as far as video-game-y 'levels' go, it's not that satisfying to me, from a shooting standpoint. Not sure what the concensus is anno 2019 on whether it holds up or not; I feel like people mostly talk about Half-Life 2 these days. Confusing or not, it still begs the question WHY? Why choose a name that is not only very similar but also not catchy, not memorable, not unique, not logical, not fun, just..... strange. There almost has to be something behind it, either as far as future 'series' (?) go, or something else we don't know. Because I find it very hard to believe that people within MS are that enthusiastic about it otherwise. Then again, the Xbox One had a pretty flimsy excuse for its name, and ended up going a different route anyway. They should've just called it the Monolith or something. Sounds cool and powerful.

For me, it was: Into the Breach Night in the Woods Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring the Legend of Zelda Moonlighter Super Mario Maker 2
Seems about right. Haven't been playing all that much Switch in general this year (69 hours & 15 games, says Nintendo). I would have thought Moonlighter would be higher on the list, especially with how short Night in the Woods is. Maybe it's in no particular order? Or perhaps it's literally just counting number of sessions.
Spot on for Nintendo to recommend Severed to me though. I totally need to rebuy that after giving away my Vita a couple years ago.

I've replayed the original a couple of years ago and I agree that it doesn't quite hold up. Blurry textures aside, my biggest complaint would be the physics. Player movement in particular lacks a sense of weight that I feel would be needed for the level of immersion Half Life is going for.

It doesn't work for me for some reason. It wouldn't be that surprising for me, though. Smash on no. 1 and Splatoon on 2. I've replayed the original a couple of years ago and I agree that it doesn't quite hold up. Blurry textures aside, my biggest complaint would be the physics. Player movement in particular lacks a sense of weight that I feel would be needed for the level of immersion Half Life is going for. I don't mind that the physics aren't that realistic, but I do mind how much platforming/ladder climbing there is. Moving boxes and other stuff is also janky beyond belief. You press E and move an inch and the box you're pulling shoots across the entire room. But I'm having fun.

Yeah, the Nintendo Switch thing doesn't work for me either. It recognizes my Nintendo ID but then goes to "start your 2020 journey" instead of a 2019 recap. Not that it matters much as I got it a month ago and only played Pokemon Sword for 16 Hours since.

Maybe it's NA only? The top games part was also fixed so I'm getting Ys VIII as #4 and Ace Attorney Trilogy as #5 which is believable. That also reminds me that I still need to finish the last case of Trials and Tribulations.

I had a dream last night where Nintendo cancelled Metroid Prime 4. As horrible as that may sound it made me think about my video game predictions for 2020 (Metroid being cancelled is not one of them though...... or is it?) Here they are: - Sony will reveal an ICO remake, developed by Bluepoint. Either for PS4 or PS5 or both. - Travis Touchdown comes to Smash Ultimate. - SquareEnix releases a Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy remaster with all three games in a collection. - Konami finally reveals a new console Castlevania in the making and it is totally not what fans wanted. Again. - Nier Remaster for the PS4 + Automata 2 reveal. There! I said it. What are your predictions?
