Duke Nukem Forever starts off on a really bad foot, but it becomes relatively more entertaining as the game progresses. Overall though, I still think it's very mediocre, and it doesn't hold a candle to Duke Nukem 3D, which is one of my favorite games ever. I don't like what I've played of either Halo or Half Life 2, which probably contributes to my not being a big fan of Duke Nukem Forever, from a gameplay standpoint. I preordered Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon on Steam just now. I held off on preordering it since I wanted to try the first Far Cry, which I've had on GOG for forever, so I could see if Far Cry's basic gameplay appeals to me... which it does. Far Cry is pretty fun, although I wish stealth wasn't ridiculously difficult. I gave up on stealth pretty early on, for the most part, and have decided to just treat the game as a normal shooter in a sandbox world. I'm on a giant ship at the moment, shooting guys and stuff. It's neat, and I can see myself finishing this, so I decided to preorder Blood Dragon in order to obtain the game's soundtrack when it comes out

I'd be on the other side of the fence about ignoring the Duke Nukem Forever haters, I'd put the people that actually like it into the Legend of Dragoon fan camp. It's not a horribly broken and unplayable game, it had a far worse crime of being just boring to play. I was never a big fan of Duke Nukem 3D so it's not nostalgia talking. The writing is awful in the game and really distasteful. In the original it was cheesy and just had Duke ripping off one liners straight out of 80's action films. It's just crass in DNF for the most part. For the rest of the game it's like it was written by a writer in 2005 that just stumbled across /b/ for the first time.

I gave Duke Forever an honest try, and didn't entirely hate it at first, but then came the turret section...then came the Hive level. I wasn't liking how the weapons felt at all, which is terrible because a Duke game is all about the weapons (then again, Duke 3D's were really unsatisfying to me as well). The boss fights were all pretty much one-trick ponies, in that they could only be damaged by explosives, your explosive weapons didn't carry enough maximum ammo to kill the enemies, and some of them were only vulnerable at specific instants, turning it into the worst possible sort of Nintendo boss. Not to mention the whole ammo thing constantly has you running back to grab more from conveniently placed ammo crates. Seriously? If you're going to do that, you should just let the player carry enough friggin' ammo to start with!
And really, The Hive is probably the worst designed level I've played in recent days, and plays host to probably the worst Duke joke in the game. Once I encountered the boss fight there that you can only hurt by bouncing pipebombs off of trampolines at very specific moments, I was compelled to remove all instances of the game from my hard drive.

Duke Nukem Forever is the Lords of Shadow of FPS games. A creatively bankrupt game that has no soul of its own, and instead mindlessly (and poorly) imitates various other popular games in the genre, aping the surface design while utterly misunderstanding and/or misapplying the core concepts behind said design.

Tell us how you really feel.
Not that I think you're wrong.

It's sort of a shame you ended there, since in my opinion the game improves shortly after that point, though it's not like you're missing much

I played some more Far Cry; this game is really kind of badly designed, from a combat standpoint. I'm playing on Normal, and the enemy AI is laughable with how they'll just charge at me from around a corner, yet if I'm far away and not behind cover, they'll have perfect aim and kill me in seconds. It can make combat rather aggravating at times, how certain situations are ridiculously easy while other situations are ridiculously hard. Am I playing the game wrong? I feel like the only way to make any real progress most of the time is to snipe at enemies from far away, before they have time to get themselves situated and ready to fire their perfect-aiming guns at me. I want the game to be challenging, but not in a way where being out of cover causes me to get shot to death in seconds by someone who I don't even know is there. If there's no option for that, then I'll probably settle for playing on the easiest setting.

You haven't seen true Far Cry aggravation until you've met the Tri gens.

Started playing Rogue Galaxy for the first time. I heard the story sucks, but the sheer hugeness of the game is what I'm trying it out for. As long as the characters don't get too annoying, a crappy story won't bother me.

Finally got around to beating Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. The DS is filled to the brim with great games, but this one really stands out. If you enjoyed the Phoenix Wright series, you owe it to yourself to check this thing out.

PLAY IT.

The ending positively threw me for a loop. Did not see that coming.

You haven't seen true Far Cry aggravation until you've met the Tri gens. Trigens aren't that bad. Aim for the head and use cover when you can (the first encounter with the trigen on the beach has some really conveniently placed rocks that work awesome for blocking his attack while allowing you to lay into him). I think it was the final level (Volcano?) that starts you off with nothing and a trigen coming right for you? There's an M4 in the water in front of you but you only get a couple of shots... ...man, that level was silly intense. Like, NOW I know that the secret to it is just swim in the water! it'll take you past all of the danger and take you where you need to go , but at the time I had no fucking clue. I dropped down, grabbed the M4, popped that dude in the head, and I zig zagged through the jungle, listening for the telltale sign of the larger trigens activating before zooming off in another direction. It was tense as fuck and took a little bit, but it worked and when I found out the much less stressful and easier solution, I was all like "fffffFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuck". The other map that I wound up doing entirely wrong was Rebellion. Night time map, entire island at play, trigens revolting. You have to get from A to B and I got turned around and lost, so I wound up spending like two hours trucking around that island, feeling my way out and scared shitless the whole way. It was pretty awesome. Right up there with that one escape level toward the end of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis when you bust out of the BMP2 and have to make it back to friendly territory (again, years later I'd find out how I was supposed to solve that one, but I totally did it wrong and have great memories of it). Really wish we'd get another Far Cry Instincts game, because I loved what they did with the license there. Same general storyline but then it shoots off in this whole new direction and with those wicked sweet feral powers. The way you approached familiar maps in new directions and with new paths (optimized for the limitations of the Xbox hardware, no doubt) kept the freshness/familiarity balanced pretty well and the entirely new end game to the first game was better designed than the climatic battle of Far Cry (though the super last bit of Far Cry is still aces). Love me some Far Cry... I really need to move on and play 2 and 3 one day Speaking of Rogue Galaxy, I had a blast with that game. It's closer to a B-lister (most of what it does is done better elsewhere, though the combination of all of it in one game was interesting), but if you're willing to put up with its flaws (some worse than others; the dungeons get more monotonous and dull before they get better), it's a good ride. Make sure you spend time with each of the characters...get comfortable with how they fight, keep everyone viable throughout the game with their leveling and whatnot...really explore the story as much as you can. Do the bounties and work on the grid thingy.

If you enjoyed the Phoenix Wright series, you owe it to yourself to check this thing out. I dare say it actually surpasses the Phoenix Wright series on account of being so tightly written. It was hard for me to ever really be satisfied with PW's episodic narrative, as it never felt like there was really enough. But for Ghost Trick, I can honestly say I don't mind the fact that it'll likely never get a sequel, because everything's wrapped up so well, and the twists are all so brilliantly handled.

I'm about ready to give up on Far Cry. I realized that using binoculars on enemies makes them show up on your radar, which is helpful, but it's still too much of a frustrating pain in the ass to deal with their perfect aim that takes away all of my health and armor in literally a couple seconds.
