Talk about a missed oppurtunity.
Looks like I'll have to wait until the Wii is modifiable to the point where you can access Japanese/European downloads (I doubt it will be as simple as it is to set up a Japanese XBox Live account).

Wow, Nintendo has really bungled this all up imo. I was sort of planning on getting a Wii on launch day as I bought into the hype. However, since then it's been awful news after awful news from Nintendo. First the price of the system and controllers, then the pretty awful launch lineup, then the announcement that the system would not be region free, and now this!

That is pretty damn shoddy- but once again, moreso for us European chumps! 50hz gaming anyone? A lack of some of the best RPG's and a few other great games? No thanks!
(Mind you, I was mainly planning on buying the system for the new titles- I have most of the SNES/NES/N64 stuff I want... even going so far as to buying the inferior PAL versions for rarity...boy I can be a contradictory suck fest!)
Still though, thats gotta hurt for people thinking they could finally playing Chrono Trigger etc... in the UK legit.

Meh, its only a matter of time before a mod comes out so that you can download whatever the hell you want. I'm still getting the Wii, regardless.

That's strange. It got relesed over here (Iceland) as a pack-in with FF4 as a part of the FF Cronicles series.

Nintendo consoles have a reputation for being hard to crack. I doubt they'll just slap a Sony Memory Stick in there that can be fit into other devices to transfer ROMs on. Also, I fail to see how "not universal" means "bog standard Euro releases only." Konami's Castlevania and Contra collection for PC demonstrates that (at least some) NES games can be updated. I'd imagine that some companies will want the opportunity to give gamers the correct speed games while retaining (or fixing up) translations. Again, there's nothing one way or another about this so getting flabbergasted and disgusted seems a bit premature to me. Nintendo should clarify the situation. Probably, we'll find that the game suppliers will have a say on how much work goes into the ports.

Reminds me of how used to 60 hertz I've gotten after that display option was added to all those PS2 games.

I've always preffered using games on their original systems so I'm not super dissapointed (oh and I'm in Australia so I'm probably more use to video game related dissapointment).
Won't stop me from buying a Wii and it won't drive me into the red clawed hands of Sony. It's their loss not mine in as far as they would've maybe money on this if they'd done it right.

Still pretty disappointed by Nintendo, but understandable none-the-less. The Virtual Console was never a true, diehard reason for me to get a Revolution (a.k.a. Wii), just a good bonus to buy one. Still gonna buy the Revolution (a.k.a. Wii).

I imagine it might work that they simply port titles from one country for the other
