Why not? The GBA version is the only one I've played, so I'm wondering what is superior about the other versions (the translation so far has been the main complaint about the GBA version that I've read). The battle system is a bit slower and more sluggish. That's....about it. The American version took out the opening song (though that's par for a Tales game) and the voice clips are strange to hear in English, but the translation itself is fine. It's more faithful to the original than the infamous fan hack. Anyway, "adventure" is too ambigious of a term to use. It used to be for Infocom text games and Sierra/Lucasarts style games. Not so much anymore, I guess, since those style of games are pretty rare.

I think adventure games was here before RPGs and Action games. The game that invented the genre is *tam tam tam* Adventure for Atari 2600. the game was released in 1978 and it really is Zelda with dots and squares. So if anything, RPGs and Action games are sub genres of adventure, so I consider it to be genre of it's own.
The GBA port of Tales of Phantasia is really awful. The graphics are less good, they butchered the music quality and the game is really slow. This thing barely moves, it totally ruined the battle-system. The whole thing feels so clunky it's nearly impossible to play (for me, atleast). And it's not because of the GBA, it proved many times it can play games like ToP. It's because Namco didn't really bother, they gave it one of the smallest GBA Carts (the SNES original used the biggest SNES Cart) and poor programming.

I consider Metroid, Zelda, and Metroidvanias to be action-adventure games. Still adventure games, but a sub-genre of adventure games.
I also consider there to be four general sub-genres of rpgs. To simplify, I consider these to be:
Command based: These are games like Final Fantasy. They might have active battles like Mario RPG, but they are entirely command based. Strategy rpgs: These play like strategy games with rpg elements, or rpgs with strategy elements. Action rpgs: These have direct control of your character and often play like other genres, but are still rpgs. Real time command based: These are games where you have total real time control of your character, but never 100% direct control of your playable character. These are games like Tales of..., most games by Tri-Ace, Chronicles of Radia War, Madara 2, and even though they have elements of strategy rpgs I consider Monstania and Treasure Hunter G to be these kinds of rpgs. They are real time, if I remember correctly, and totally command based. They are really only strategy rpgs if you consider a grid to define strategy rpgs.
Also, I agree that Tales of Phantasia was better for SFC than GBA, but both were good.
