I'm scanning in the manual right now; I can do some basic translation but anyone here want to volunteer for the more extensive stuff (The story comes to mind - There's a big wall of text with barely-legible subtitles for the Kanji)? Edit: Here's a link to the images in .jpg format; If anyone wants them I've got .bmp scans but they're pretty huge, so let me know. Sweet Home Booklet Scans (Japanese)

I'll give a few tips on Sweet Home at the beginning of the game. Some of this may sound obvious, but I'll help to circumvent some of the cumbersome inventory management.
-In the very first room, have Asuka use the Vacuum on the shards of glass. -For frescoes, Look at one first and then use Taro's Camera to get a clue out of them. -To pick up an item, look at it then hit "Item" on the menu, then highlight one of the two empty spaces beneath a character's name and select "Move." You can do this to swap items in your inventory with other items if you're full up on space. -The slot at the very bottom of a character in the Item menu is for weapons. They're managed the same way as items, but you can only hold one at a time. -Emi's Key is what you need to open the locked door on the right. That Key will be very useful! -For that rope you find in the hall beyond the locked door, use Kazuo's lighter. -Red pieces of wood collapse after they are stepped on five times. Blue pieces are permanent, so think about where you want to place those. Unfortunately, you can't distinguish between red and blue pieces in the menu, so if you forget, swap them with another item to remember what they looked like. -You can only have three members in a party at any given time, so if you want everyone to stay together, you'll have to use the Party command to switch between one group of three and one group of two. Admittedly fairly annoying. -Save a LOT. If you're a stickler about losing any health this early, save often. But bear in mind you only have one save slot!

The character items can be used in battle too. The lighter is good against worms, the camera flash can be used on bats etc.

So am I wrong in thinking that this game is basically Maniac Mansion with RPG combat bolted on top?

Sure, if EVERYTHING in Maniac Mansion was trying to kill you and all the deaths were more than just "Ooops, now you're a tombstone"

Well, just to bump the thread here's a storytime. The producer of Sweet Home, Juzo Itami, was a famous actor/writer/director in Japan who died under suspicious circumstances in 1997. He'd done some movies (Marusa no Onna - which was made into a game by Capcom also, and Minbo no Onna) that painted the Yakuza as a bunch of thugs. This didn't sit well, so after the latter movie was released, a bunch of goons from the Goto organization ambushed him and beat/sliced the shit out of him as a warning. This ended up pissing off the public, and there was a temporary crackdown on organized crime in Japan.
Anyway, at the end of 1997 Itami "comitted suicide" by jumping off a building, after a scandal broke out that he was cheating on his wife. However, according to the book Tokyo Vice and others, a bunch of Goto's men basically murdered Itami then typed up a suicide note. I haven't finished Tokyo Vice but I've been meaning to - it's by the guy that did that "a real Yakuza plays Yakuza" article from several years ago. There's stuff about the Itami "suicide" in it, since the author did an investigation on and was repeatedly threatened by Goto-gumi (apparently Goto is a massive piece of evil shit, and among other things was able to both break US extradition laws AND cut in front of other people for a liver transplant here thanks to the good ol' FBI).

Am I missing something here about how to uncurse and unpoison party members? I keep getting poisoned by worms. These worms, by the way, attack en masse, yet are apparently so organized that they can attack in unison. Organized worms are not something I anticipated...

Use Akiko's first aid kit on the status effects. If she croaks, there's pills as the "backup item." (they're actually cookies according to the manual). That's something we haven't discussed - if anyone dies, they're dead for good, and you lose access to their special item (which sucks). But it's still possible to move forward - there are replacement items that you can get in some rooms that will give you the same abilities (matches, broom, pills, polaroid camera, wire lockpick). That being said, I always save scum and reload if anyone dies, because like Fire Emblem games, I'm above realism bullshit.

I should have watched the movie so I could role play properly.

I should have watched the movie so I could role play properly. Yea, we'll need to screen that. There's a lot of differences but some of the puzzles made more sense after seeing it (although one in particular is totally inconsistent).

Speaking of which, I think I'll restart my game and rename the characters after their tools. Because I keep forgetting what everyone has.

Speaking of which, I think I'll restart my game and rename the characters after their tools. Because I keep forgetting what everyone has. That's funny you should say that, Bob mentioned that on IRC not long before this post. Ok, started playing it last night. My current tips are save scum as Sotenga said earlier - I'm personally reloading if anyone takes damage at this point. Unfair? Cheating? Maybe. Who cares. One tip I have is that you can put a wood board down on a gap and then pick it back up - this is useful for when you get the good, "blue" boards. If you need to use a rotten board, only take one person across, otherwise it's gonna break on the way back, causing one of your teammates to fall (and suffer continual damage until you rescue them with the "Team" command).

A couple tips:
1. You can call your teammates for help in battle! This allows you to control your second party for a good 30 seconds or so. If you can navigate them to meet with the party that is in combat, they will join the fray, allowing you to not only fight with a full 5 team members, but also ensure everyone gets XP! This is very useful, because
2. A character's HP is restored to maximum upon gaining a level! Healing items are rather valuable, so in order to avoid wasting them you should always make sure your entire team is getting XP. It will dramatically reduce the amount of healing you need to do.
3. If you solve a puzzle but nothing happens, try examining the puzzle again and using the Pray command to ask for divine intervention.
EDIT: Oh, and one other thing. It's not really obvious if you don't pay attention to the stats screen, but there are two different types of attack stats: physical attack and spiritual attack. Physical attack works against corporeal creatures like zombies and bats and that sort of thing, and spiritual attack generally works best against ethereal or demonic enemies. Always keep a couple characters carrying spiritual attack type weapons or you'll run into enemies that you won't be able to damage effectively!

Weird, I haven't gotten HP back from level up.
BTW, warning - Stun SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUcks. If you are stunned in battle, you need to pray, otherwise any attack will hit your stunned party member. It is the shittiest status effect in the game heretofore known as Shin Negative Status Effect no Densetsu. Fuck, the name doesn't even make sense...
