www.hardcoregaming101.net/volgarr/volgarr.htmAfter a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, this 16-bit arcade-inspired game was released on PCs last month. It's incredibly difficult, in no small part to the sparse checkpoints, but it's very deliberately and fairly designed.

This looks great. Rastan was one of my favorite arcade games. I'm definitely going to have to check out Volgarr.

I really hope that if these guys do another game, they'll hire a better artist. The backgrounds look really ugly, like from a bad shareware game from the nineties or something.

I think I read somewhere that it's because they ran out of funding. That's a really good comparison though - I thought of Jill of the Jungle or something when I saw it! This game looks like a lot of fun, but the disconnect between the backgrounds and the sprites (or even between the weird sparse backgrounds and nicely-detailed foreground elements) are offputting.

In case anyone is still on the fence about this, it's currently 50% off on Steam (ca. 47 hours remaining).

I sucked at Rastan and of course I'm sucking at this, having troubles even to beat the first boss. I however still like it very much for its simplicity and precise gameplay.

This one's in my backlog of steam games to eventually play one of these days, but it looks quite fun. Adultswim games seems to have a pretty good track record with the titles they publish; while they may not always be must-plays, it seems they are usually dependable with making sure the games that come out under their name are at least "good," or unique in some way.

I can vouch for this, having bought the AS games Humble Bundle. I'm enjoying a lot Volgarr, Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe and especially Super House of Dead Ninjas, which can be described as a super-fast and bloody platformer roguelike or better, rogue-lite (permadeath, ever-changing stages, but with the achievements you can build your character and give him better weapons, more energy, helping objects etc.). Still having Fist Puncher on the backlog though.
