www.hardcoregaming101.net/guerrillawar/guerrillawar.htmAn offshoot of the Ikari Warriors series (kind of), Guerrilla War is a Commando-type run and gun from SNK. It's mostly infamous for its Japanese release, entitled Guevara, where the player controlled Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. Seeing as how US-Cuba relations have never been the best, this scenario and title was changed for the overseas release, though nothing else was altered.

I like Guerrilla War a lot. At least the NES version and I consider it to be superior to all the Ikari Warriors. It was the first game I beat, since it's so easy

Man this brings back memories I used to play this game a lot on the PC but I think the furthest I ever got was level 3. This was one of the last IBM games that came on self-booting floppies. Btw the article only shows an ugly CGA screenshot for the IBM version but it actually also supported EGA, which looked a lot better.

I loved Guerilla War for the NES as a kid. Me and my brother played the crap out of it (I think the infinite continues worked in it's favor). I've also only played the arcade game once in my entire life. I remember it as being an awesome experience. I think I was about twelve at the time. I also consider Shock Troopers to be a spiritual sequel to SNK's old rotary games even if they don't have the rotary controls. The overhead run'n'gun is probably my favorite, and one of the most overlooked, genres. It's been cast to the wayside more than traditional space shmups. It's good to see it get some love.

As usual, a quality article from Sotenga. SNK's pre-NG games certainly are odd in their way. One thing to note, though: the SNK Arcade Classics 0 compilation on PSP included this one, and in the US and Europe (as SNKAC0 was Japanese-only) Guerrilla War saw a separate release on the PS minis section, alongside all of the other titles on that compilation. store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/games/guerrilla-war/cid=UP0576-NPUZ00157_00-GUERRILLAWAR0001 ...and they even have some games that are not on SNKAC0, like Gang Wars and Time Soldiers. Huh.

What's kind of weird is that the Japanese version of the Famicom game shot up in price about a year ago. It also has "Sasuke vs. Commander" hidden in it, too! Two historical games in one!

The only reason why you guys think Guerilla War on the NES is easy is because someone forgot to turn off the debug mode and remove infinite continues. It's actually harder than the NES Contras when played the proper way (limited lives, no continues).

I thought the Famicom version was always kind of expensive. Except when I lucked out and won it in a loose games lot a few years ago for like $15, with Ultima: Exodus (already had the English version) and F-1 Race (which I already had a CIB).

Didn't he become more of a hipster icon in the early 2000s or so? I was pretty young back then but I don't recall that iconography being that prevalent when the game was released. I need to go back and insert that bit about Sasuke Vs. Commander (YES SHOGUN) at some point!

I forgot that it's not the complete game, but according to Cutting Room there's graphics for the score and stuff, so they probably just ran out of time and didn't finish it. Here's the link: tcrf.net/Guerrilla_War_%28NES%29
