We'll see how it turns out, but I'm just worried that voting results will start drifting towards whatever's most popular rather than "an interesting game I haven't tried yet". Yeah. My main concern is the anonymity of the poll might make people vote differently for whatever reason. On the bright side, this system is perfect for this month since checking and double checking votes for each game would be an obsessive compulsive nightmare.

Most of the time people are good about voting for a game they think makes for an interesting discussion. I mean, we played Electro Man for God's sake! However, just because a game is popular doesn't mean it isn't worthy of discussion. Critically examining a popular game outside of the context of its era can highlight its flaws and weaknesses, and determining why it was popular years after the fact can be a huge challenge.
This month we should have plenty to talk about by sheer virtue of dealing with mascot games. Why did some of them work and why didn't others?
I'm honestly curious if mascot games are still a thing. That seems like a dumb question until you realize Angry Birds is a thing, as is Skylanders.

He even survived the whole "let's put him in something entirely different for some last-ditch cash" that Crash, Banjo, and Spyro went through.

I'm not talking about traditional, saccharinely sweet mascots. I mean characters that are easily recognizable and associated with a specific brand or company. I mean, does Master Chief count as a mascot? How about Ryu Hayabusa? Meat Boy?
I suppose that's another question for this month: what qualifies a character as being a mascot? How do current mascots differ from older ones? Etc.

Skylander's is amusing because Spyro more or less disappeared from the franchise. Also clearly we should ALL vote for Bug! :V
Sure I haven't played it since I played a demo back when the Saturn came out...what could possibly go wrong?!

We'll see how it turns out, but I'm just worried that voting results will start drifting towards whatever's most popular rather than "an interesting game I haven't tried yet". Again, I think that's how the votes have worked anyway. We actually worked really hard coming up with a solution to that. In short, we divided up the randomizer lists to ensure that no crop of games would have an obvious crowd favorite. It's worked well enough so far.

Sorry, I just had to. Yes. I occasionally say that for no reason at all.

all of my votes are losing... That is one of the two patterns I've discovered since following (then working on) the podcast. 75% of the games that win are ones that I didn't vote for. Approximately 85% of that subset are games I really don't have any interest in. Of that, 135% percent fall during a month where I really want to be playing something else (such as GTAV or whatever). Approximately 66% of these games I didn't vote for and didn't want to play I end up liking to some degree. I still would rather be playing something else. As a follow up to zerker's and xerxes' comments, unless the randomizer's picks are a bunch of weird or unpopular games, most of the time it at least feels like we end up playing whatever SNES game is on the list, or otherwise what's most popular ;p. It's kind of a small miracle we got the Wonderboy challenge!

It's kind of a small miracle we got the Wonderboy challenge! Yeah I'm concerned about that too. I mean, two of the games that are winning are for a Nintendo system. I know the SNES was the platform du jour for crummy platformers, but this was one of the concerns I had with a public vote as there is generally a Nintendo bias in most retrogaming circles. Then again, I think we've played more DOS games than anything else this entire year, so maybe I shouldn't be so worried. At the very least we can take solace in the fact that Bug! isn't winning. :p
