Plok arrived today. So does Plok have any sort of way to continue from a previous session or is it pretty much a one-sitting game? One sitting, sadly. I think the game would have had wider acceptance if it had a password system and a more functional continue system (and from their comments on their website, so do the guys that made the game). On the other hand, it's not physically painful to play like the other two games, so it's more of a bummer than a game-killer.

Okay. I'll sample the game tonight, but put off any serious attempt until the weekend then.

All right, I've made it to the final world of Gex. Final world, not final boss, because good christ, this is hard. Here's the thing: Rezopolis only has two levels before the final boss. Problem is they're really, really. And you better be able to get high bounces off of enemies like ALL the time, because if you don't, you're fucked six ways from Sunday.
The best advice I can give you: BE PATIENT. Sure, that sounds really obvious, but it's really easy to overstep or miss a jump and fall into a pit of instant death static. Bring as many lives as you think you'll need from the horror world, then bring even more than that. Also, keep in mind the robots with the lances WILL hit you if you hit them head on, even if you manage to land a hit on them. Either avoid them or try to hit them from above, never head on.

It's mentioned in the manual but there are some trees in Plok that have fruit growing on them, if you punch the fruit TWO times (never more...NEVER MORE) you'll get about 2/3rds health recovery from them. Pretty much every platforming stage has at least one fruit (sometimes not attached to the trees).

Which fruit? The game sure won't tell you. Just how badly are you needing that health? Also, I finally beat Gex! It was really only the last two levels that gave me any significant amount of grief, although the final boss gave me enough trouble that I had to go back and farm some lives. Oddly enough, the final boss stage might be the best looking part of the game, especially since it has camera scaling that nowhere else in the game actually uses. Weird.

Thanks for the heads up Bob, I'll be sure to over punch all the fruit now...great. Although it's quite clever in a way, expert Plok players won't need the health and so are more likely to earn the bonus stages.

So, has anybody taken a look at the secret ending for Gex? Since I've beaten the game, and we can all basically agree nobody wants to beat every single bonus stage in the game perfectly to get to Planet X, I figured it wouldn't hurt. There's some interesting stuff in there, once you get past the whole ten minutes worth of the game being a sarcastic asshole to you. I almost like the original concept of the game better, where Gex is living on a floating island with a bunch of other geckos, when suddenly friggin' demons attack. Maybe they thought the whole 'main character lives in peace in some village until invading force attacks' was too overdone? I mean, that's basically Ardy Lightfoot in a nutshell. I have to wonder, was that before they got Dana Gould on board? There's also a lot of sketches of things like realistically drawn insects and nature scenes, along with sketches where Gex is the size of an actual gecko.

I'm pretty sure there's a bonus stage there, and it's not too tough to earn three or so extra lives from it. So just keep speedrunning it until you think you're good for lives.

Well, I played the first level of Rezopolis... and proceeded to NOT find the remote! AUGH. We'll see if I try again today or take a break In a related question: do you get any password midway through Rezopolis or is it just a one-shot deal? ... And I played some Plok today. It's honestly a bit too frustrating for me. At least it lets you re-start after Cotton Island, but there's just too many things that can hit you REALLY QUICKLY or are very difficult to dodge (I'm looking at you floaty spikey guys). I ended up 3/4 through the old-timey treasure hunt and got Game Over. I think I'm done with this for the time being. This is one game that I think save states are warranted if I play it outside of GC9x

How'd you miss the remote Zerker? It's right in your path next to a checkpoint as far as I can tell although it blends into the background a bit.
Finished Gex, the last levels are difficult, frustrating but still some of the better levels in the game because their design is fairly tight. Used a password to visit the Planet X levels - there's some decent bits and pieces in there but some of them are pretty obnoxious.

It's a testament to how bothersome that game is that I hadn't even heard half of those and I've finished the damn thing.

I could have sworn there's some of these lines I haven't heard, like "Did you enjoy that?" and "Here comes the sweet stuff." I wonder how many lines in here are unused, or if we could send them over to The Cutting Room Floor.

I was quite happy to NOT hear Gex speak ever again after my first session.
Pro tip for the last boss: there are actually walls you can cling onto; they are not just background. The rest mostly falls into place after that.
