Thanks guy, I was really happy with this one glad you like it! It probably looks a little better without Awesome Possum in the foreground there but I thought his inclusion was for the best. Also, thank you for using the non-proto version of Catry, I really don't need the nightmares right now.

Well it's been awhile, Ardy couldn't fish her out of the worm canonically until after his dumb adventure. Plus you know we're PG-13, NOTHING SUSS.

Hey Guys. I don't mean to resurrect a dead topic, and hopefully I'm not restating points someone else made. Anyway, I just recently started listening to GC 199x on my commute ( I have a total 3 hr commute each day ). So, thanks for that! And recently I was talking to my wife about my desire for a "classic game playing group" similar to a 'book club.' It appears I've found it. Unfortunately I won't be able to join in until the next game, but I definitely want to try.
All that out of the way, my post does involve this topic. I was listening to this podcast in particular, and I heard you guys talking about the first "talking mascot" character, and I personally think that's Q*bert. If he's not the first, hes definitely the earliest. He also arguably demonstrates the "attitude" that other mascots have, since he would make a noise and spit out a word bubble that displays "@!#?@!" when he gets hit by an enemy or falls off the pyramid. Now, its been indicated that this is his special 'language', but I really think this was initially meant to be a curse word like sh*t or f*ck despite what the designers may have decided it was afterwards. I feel this way, because Bentley Bear in Crystal Castles says "#?!" when he dies. Crystal Castles was released a year later, and is most clearly inspired by Q*bert with its pseudo 3d structures. This is the most recognizable thing about Q*bert. You could also argue that Q*bert was an early platforming mascot as well, but Q*bert's mechanics don't really qualify, IMHO, because only direction and timing is important, and its more akin to a 3d-frogger type jumping than something like the classic Donkey Kong.
I would also agree that the Space Invaders qualify as a 'mascot'. They may not be playable, but they are extremely recognizable and have made cameos in many different works of media from other games, to comics and cartoons, and are pretty much the go-to 'avatar' for retro gaming in general. Don't forget Donkey Kong started out as a villain, and became an official mascot over time. IMHO, he was the intended mascot for the original Donkey Kong; he is the title character and did get 3 games devoted to him. Mario didn't even have a 'real name' at that point, but I think Nintendo eventually switched gears and focused on Mario as their mascot.

If all thread resurrects were as well written and considered as this, no one would mind in the slightest. Q*Bert is certainly one of the earliest Mascots but his game is definitely more of a arcade-puzzle game (by the definition of what arcade puzzle was in the 80s).

So it seems Gex is now on GOG for those that want to endure the horrors of Dana Gould as a talking gecko alongside us.
