The podcast is available! Grab it here! Our year-end podcast will be dealing with two games about punching the crap out of people. Although one of these games has knives and guns, and the other doesn't strictly deal with people. From our Punch-Out!! ripoff files, we have this pugilistic pair: The Super Spy/Wade Hixton's Counter Punch (Neo-Geo/Game Boy Advance) Super Spy is an early Neo Geo game released by SNK in 1990. It is a first-person shooter and beat 'em up game with action RPG elements in which players move through the many floors of an office building shooting terrorists. It was an early example of a first-person shooter where the player character's arms and weapons are visible on screen. The plot revolves around a C.I.A agent, named Roy Heart, who needs to traverse office buildings, and warehouses to stop a group of terrorists, known as the Zolge King terrorist group, led by a man name King (who bears a slight resemblance to Geese Howard in his business suit from the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters franchises, both also by SNK). The group is responsible for the horrible murders of thousands caused by destroying the subways with bombs. As Mr. Heart, the player hunts through the terrorists' bomb factory for those responsible. Wikipedia's The Super Spy ArticleDeveloped by Inferno Games, Wade Hixton's Counter Punch is an obvious tribute to the Punch-Out!! series in terms of gameplay (especially compared to the SNES game). It's pretty much the same setup - during fights, you have a variety of punches ranging from left and right, up and down. You've got an uppercut, a block and the ability to dodge left and right. Besides your regular health meter, there's a power meter on the bottom, which grows from each punch you connect, and below that is a fatigue meter. Much like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, you must keep watch of this meter so you don't over exert yourself and be unable to attack. Also like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is the inclusion of rounds instead of just three minutes of fighting. Each match earns you some cash, which can be used to purchase extra moves. HG101's Wade Hixton Segment PRO TIPPZ:Voting ended on Saturday, December 14, at 12:00 AM EST,*NOTE*: When voting, please choose a game that you want to play - and will play - but have not beaten entirely or beaten recently, say, within the last 5 - 10 years. You may not vote for a game that you have played or spoiled within the last year! It's also best to vote for a game that you have not played before. All votes are final, so no going back if you change your mind. If you're going to vote, we'd like to have you along for the ride! Previous 3 GC9X Threads:

Putting my vote for the Wade Hixton/Super Spy duo!
Not really interested in both 8 Eyes and Master of Darkness, and Milon's can fuck off.

Wait, wait. People can actually 1CC Super Spy?
Holy hell. I don't even think I'd get past the first floor...
As entertaining as it might be to subject everyone to 8 Eyes, I'm holding off for now, because every attempt I've made to play that game has ended in suffering and sadness.

I'm not sure what to vote for given I can't in good faith vote for either Milon or 8 Eyes. We've played WAY too many obtuse NES platformers as part of GC9X, and it amuses me we have not one but two up for vote this month.

Milon's Secret Castle is the only one I own, so it gets my vote. But I'm not sure if it's here or back in NY, so I don't know if I'll be able to play it even if it does win.

I strongly encourage everyone to NOT vote for 8 Eyes under any circumstances. Trust me, you don't want to suffer through that shit. It makes Milon's Secret Castle look like Super Mario Bros 3.
Super Spy/Wade Hixton looks like most interesting choice this month.

Just to make things interesting I'm gonna vote Milon's Shitty Asshole. Although I'm gonna say I won't feel bad if Super Spy/Wade Hixton wins. I'd like to try playing it again someday just to see if it's as bad as I remember. From what I do remember, though, it is not the kind of game that you want to play alone and without the assistance of FAQs or whatever. Since we probably won't be playing that one this month, I figured I'd mention something somewhat interesting - the American plot is about post apocalyptic stuff and mutants and whatever, but the Japanese version took place in the 1800's, and was about an MI-5 agent/Baronet named Julian James Bond fighting against a plot by satanist criminals. And "Cutrus" the name of his hawk was a mistranslation/Engrish of "Cutlass" but remained the same in the US version. So yeah.

Voting for the Super Spy/Wade Hixton combo, only because I'm vaguely familiar with Super Spy and have always meant to play that one. That reminds me, I should totally dig out my Wii version of Punch-Out.

Oh, you're pairing them?
Ugh.
I may play Master of Darkness on its own if it wins, but there's no way in hell I'm playing 8 Eyes.
I think I'll abstain from voting.
Also, for some reason I always think of Castlequest/Castle Excellent whenever Milon's Secret Castle is mentioned. Not that that game is any better, mind you.
