Hello, first time poster, long time reader. I've been on a bit of a GBA kick lately, and I was hoping I could get some recommendations on good Japanese/Europe only games. I already have a few:
Mother 1+2 Mother 3 Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart Rhythm Tengoku Densetsu no Stafi 3
I'm interested in Kuru Kuru Kuririn and the other Stafi games, but I'm not sure what else is great, though I know I've heard of a lot more I just can't think of right now. I would really appreciate any recommendations you can provide! Thank you.

I assume you are comfortable with Japanese and do not have particular qualms with poor GBA soundfonts.
Slime Mori Mori: Dragon Quest (a bit short though) Hachiemon Narikiri Dungeon 2/3 Tengai Makyou: Oriental Blue (has a fan-translation) Summon Night Hajimari no Ichi Black Matrix Zero (PSX version is better though) Boktai 3 Mr. Driller Ace - Strange Bacteria (+Drill Land for the GC) Fire Emblem 6 (has a fan-translation) Tomato Adventure (if you can get it used) Magical Vacation Super Robot Taisen J (AVOID SRW D)
It does also have other surprisingly good anime games. If you're fine with Mother I+II you'll love Ganbare Goemon I+II too.

Thank you very much! I'll definitely look into these. I knew I was forgetting one I already have - Slime Morimori. That's a great spin-off series. I've been thinking about Mr. Driller Ace since I really like Mr. Driller, but I've heard that if you've played Drill Land (which I do have), Drill Spirits, and Drill Till You Drop, you'll have experienced everything the series has to offer. Is Ace still worth it?
And I'd definitely take GB/C suggestions too. I have very few Japanese Game Boy/Color games, IIRC only two Tamagotchi games.

GBC? I recommend the last Ganbare Goemon: Dynamites game (a handheld shortened down Goemon 2), but none of the other Goemon GBC games (certainly not the two that were localized in English) Star Ocean Blue Sphere Tales of the World Narikiri Dungeon (though it's obsoleted by the PSP remake) Samurai Kid I'm sorry but I don't know a lot of GBC gems besides Shantae. Also, about GBA games, you'd better grab both "Shaman King: Master of Spirits" games. They are quality games. (I'm amazed yet how Konami messed up with New Age Goemon GBA -one of their flagship games- yet got it right with licensed games) About Japanese GBAs... there's like 32 additional levels for Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB 3 GBA) through the e-Reader service that are Japan-exclusive but you're better off emulating those levels since they are obscenely rare. Megaman Zero 3 had Japan-exclusive e-Reader context too but it was restored in the DS compilation. No such luck for Pokémon games (though localizers for Gen 3 -not the Gen 1 remakes- did a pretty good job at including some of it in the main game). It's unrelated but you should invest in some cables and Four Swords + (FSA Japanese version) for the Tetra Trackers mode, which needs a GBA for single player. It's a remake for the BS-X episodes for Marvelous (SFC) essentially. You'll need the real hardware since it get stuck on the "choose a nickname" screen on emulators...

I'll stick up for the first and third Sonic Advance games. The Metroids are pretty cool as well but much more linear than you might expect compared to Super Metroid (fine by me, tbh, I don't mind more linear level structure in games). The GBA Castlevanias are decent, too, but I've only ever finished Aria of Sorrow. Circle of the Moon isn't bad but there are a LOT of random drop components apparently? I found it a bit stiff to play -- and so haven't made much progress in it -- though I do have a nice soft spot for its music. (Harmony of Dissonance is...OK? I need to play more of that one.)
Also do check out Chu Chu Rocket. There are a ton of puzzles that apparently came from the DC version's online components that are right there on the cart.
And though a lot of people (understandably) aren't huge fans of the music, the remakes of Pokemon Red and Green are very nice, and do a lot to fix the original's severely crippling bugs.

Gegege no Kitaro by Konami, and Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting by Treasure are a couple of really good licensed games (the first has a feature on Bogleech, if you're interested).

Also, while the M2 ports are already making it almost completely obsolete, the Sega Arcade Gallery has OutRun. So if you want a copy of OutRun on handheld, that's one of your best bets -- right now.

Thanks for the even more suggestions, everyone. muteKi, I do already have SA3, the Metroid games, Pokemon, and Circle of the Moon (which I quite enjoyed, and beating it was pretty brutal, despite some not liking it), and I loved all of them, though SA3 the least, definitely. I've never been the biggest 2D Sonic fan. I had no idea about the Tetra mode. I always wanted to play some Satellaview games - I assume that's what it's a remake of? I have an SP, the GCN-GBA link cable, and a US console with an AR with the freeloader option - do I just need a copy of the Japanese version of FSA? Or does it get stuck even when played legitimately, but on another region's GCN? I know Drill Land made me pretty mad when it still detected I wasn't on a Japanese Game Cube and it wiped my memory card with my Doubutsu no Mori e+ town data on it. Anything like that with this?

Oh, Nintendo isn't as evil as Namco when it comes to wrong region save files on the GameCube. Not for this game at any rate. Basically, Zelda Four Swords Adventures has a third mode, Navi Trackers (aka Tetra Trackers) which actually begun development (according to Aonuma actually, and the files for the early concept are still in the final version) as a remake for BS-X Marvelous Athletic Course, itself a time attack bonus episode based on the game Marvelous for the Super Famicom (which is heavily inspired by Zelda, it's very reminiscent of how Nintendo experimented before on a modern-Zelda formula with StarTropics actually). It's Aonuma's first game as a director... Marvelous as a standard SFC release, followed by two four-weeeks-each bonus episodes for the Satellaview, available through emulation only of course. It always irks me when people say Fire Emblem 12 was the first game to remake BS-X content while it is clearly not. Oh, if you want more Satellaview exclusives, you could check the Zelda I remake (fan-translated), Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets (fan-translated), Famicom Detective 3, Shin Onigashima 2, three special versions of Sutte Hakkun.... There was also two spin-offs to Doremi Fantasy Milon Daibouken but they were never preserved, and are thus lost... forever Enough depressing stuff. About Zelda FSA, you'll need its Japanese copy, a GBA and a GC. And the link cable. I don't think the saving should have any issues with a JP copy on a US console for this particular game. Link the GBA (it's the primary display for in-game segments) and enjoy About the GBA Strange Bacteria, I always thought it would have been better as another mode within Drill Land (the two of them can connect by the way) but it still holds up well.

Thanks for all the info, I'll plan on getting JPN FSA soon then. I'm sad to hear that the two Doremi Fantasy games weren't preserved. For some reason I thought (or maybe just hoped) all the Satellaview games were saved. I'm one of few that likes Milon's Secret Castle, though I've yet to play Doremi Fantasy, and I've heard it's really good.

I wonder if we will ever see a fan-translation for Tomato Adventure and all Densetsu no Stafi games.

I think Tomato, who headed the Mother 3 translation, started working on it a number of years ago, though I think it's probably on indefinite hiatus at this point. It looks quite good. As for the DnS games, I don't think it'd be that necessary? Seems like most fan translation groups are more concerned about translating more text-heavy games. I would imagine the DnS games wouldn't be too hard for someone with no knowledge of Japanese outside of some of the quiz stuff, which are already covered in guides, I think.
