I'm a little more tolerant of the developers taking a chance at making something that didn't involve explosions or white men with buzzcut hair, but I definitely have to agree about both the way the game was marketed and the insane fervor of its supporters. I'd actually rather have a lesbian bulldyke space marine game, because then it would be a game and an original concept for bald space marine games instead of someone's sappy and pretentious lit class project with the pretense of an adventure/exploration game taped on. Also, I was kind of offended by how stupid the one chick was in the end, as she basically went AWOL to be with her girlfriend (unless I misunderstood something). Was that supposed to be romantic? Or show that lesbians can make really bad decisions that will get them shoved in the slammer? If she really wanted out she should have just gone and came out to her DI or something.

Ha, yeah it wasn't really as uplifting of an ending as the developers probably intended. Seemed more like the characters were setting themselves up for some very serious failure. GAME OF THE YEAR.

Huh, can't believe I forgot a few in my last post.
BEST:
Dead Rising 2: Got it on Steam and actually enjoyed it quite a bit more than the original, though something tells me it had to do with the lowered difficulty and lighter tone. Probably the one case of a dev shift I've seen where it's pretty much impossible to notice, as it still kept the original's art direction and sense of humor.
Binary Domain: I was expecting an exceptionally gray cover shooter with poor shooting mechanics and a crappy story. I got an intense run and gun with satisfying weapons, awesome boss fights and a surprisingly engaging story. Probably my favorite of any "cover shooter" I've played.
Warframe: Probably one of the few f2p games I found really damn fun to play, with awesome art direction and smooth controls. My only regret is burning out on the beta long before some of the cooler features were implemented.
Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon: Fun sandbox shooting in an awesome '80s style. Wish it could've had a genuine final boss...and a jetpack...but I guess I couldn't expect that much from a stand-alone expansion released only a few months after the original.
Worst:
Zeno Clash: the weapons and limited move pool kind of kill this for me; it's all to easy to rely on the fire arms given their unlimited ammo, and all too often the lack of moves causes encounters to devolve into "puzzle fights" that were really unsatisfying to play.
Spec Ops - The Line: Of course, the gameplay's pretty terrible, but what's really annoying is that it's like hearing a pre-recorded message meant for somebody else.
In the special "Not Really a Game but I Enjoyed it Anyway" pile:
Dear Esther: Pretentious as hell, but at least it was pretty to look at, and wasn't either a ham-handed commentary on social issues or the player.
Asura's Wrath: Pretty much a full anime series confined to a single game disc. The brawler sections are way too shallow, though the shooter ones are kinda cool. The QTEs disappointingly don't effect the action on screen very often, but overall it's enjoyable for what it is.

Best: Volgarr the Viking: I'm not even much of a fan of Rastan, but this game is so good. If you have any sympathy for hard side-scrolling action platformers, this is a true modern classic. It's definitely up there with the best Castlevanias, Ghouls N' Ghosts and Ninja Gaiden II. Only a fool lets himself get scared away by the sketchy backgrounds. worst backgrounds in recorded history. Fixed that for you. Internet groupthink definitely worked in the favor of the makers of that game. The fact that you can't criticize it without being branded a bigot didn't hurt them either. So did some bizarre parasite from an asteroid crawl into you and eat your soul? I adore the writing in Awakening. It's one of the best localizations I've seen in a long time. Almost every support conversation has some sort of line that I really like or find funny, even if it doesn't involve characters I particularly like. I also bring this up because Derboo's comment reminded me of the... issues I have with the writing in Borderlands 2. Maybe it just had something to do with Claptrap playing a big role early on in the game and being much, much more annoying than he was in the first game, but the writing overall strikes me as trying too hard to be hip or clever. It's gotten a little easier to deal with as I've played the game, but I can't tell if I like or dislike the writing yet. It's more memorable than the writing in the first game, I guess. Maybe it helps that Handsome Jack is such a massive, massive hole, giving the game a real villain, and apparently, I haven't even scraped the surface of his dickishness yet... As for otome conventions, I'm pretty new to the genre, so I guess I'm not attached to them very much. I'm interested in Sweet Fuse mainly because I like games with relationship values and because the character designs were done by the same person who does the character designs for the Ace Attorney series? I've always liked that artwork.
