The first King's Field is pretty nutty. IT HAS AN OPTION IN THE IN-GAME MENU TO FORMAT YOUR ENTIRE MEMORY CARD. I don't even mean in some sort of options menu on the title screen, I mean the normal mid-game menu, the same one you open to mess with equipment and items and junk. I lost a 100+ hour Tactics Ogre file I was still in the middle of because of this. This was before the fan translation existed, so I just bought my fiance the Japanese release and he was fumbling around in the menu trying to figure out how to save. And of course the option was in kanji so there was no "format" or "erase" or anything in katakana to act as a warning for us. Screw you too, King's Field. But yeah, it's a weird artifact of its time. I mean, it came out in December '94, just a couple weeks after the launch of the PlayStation in Japan. At that time in the US, we were still firmly entrenched in 16-bit land. These days anybody who's interested in the first King's Field can just play the fan translated version of the official Sword of Moonlight remake, which makes the experience more akin to King's Field IV.

And it feels like you're slowly descending into Hell, haha.

And it feels like you're slowly descending into Hell, haha. That sounds like Shadow Tower or Baroque .

Don't make me think of Shadow Tower, that game is the stuff of nightmares, haha.

I wonder if King's Field 1's format option led to a Sony mandate about not messing with the memory cards in game because it's pretty clear they made that a rule fairly early on in the PSX's lifespan.

That sounds like Shadow Tower or Baroque . I really want to play the PS1/Saturn version of Baroque but I don't know any Japanese Is there a game script or translation available? I've got a copy for Saturn, but never played it (played the Wii version though). I remember seeing one of those partial translation/walkthrough deals on GameFAQs when I got it, though.

Alrighty, I have two questions for anyone who's made a decent amount of progress:
A: Where do you get the Wind magic? I'm unable to enter the Palace of Wind without it. B: What do you need to do to move into Lake Noel? I got those special boots that makes a bridge appear, but this only gets me to one island and I'm unable to move off of it after that.

Thanks, ponk! Turns out I had to speak to the eating knight again so he'd build a bridge. This dungeon I'm at is ROUGH, though! I wonder if I'm even supposed to be here... question: Am I supposed to get the wind magic before I get the earth magic, or is that the other way around? I notice earth is to the left of wind on the menu and that makes me think I should have that first, but I haven't a clue where to get it.
Addendum: I'm starting to get tired of all these locked chests. What keys do I need for 'em?
More addendum-ing: Ooh, I found a Magician's Key for chests and the earth magic! But now where do I go to get the wind magic... hmm.
One more addendum: Shoot, the magician's key only works on the green chests, not the brown ones. I'm wondering if I missed a normal chest key somewhere?

Oh man! I just found the copper key for chests... in a room I've been in before in the Barracks. I admit, it's pretty hard to see things when they're just laid on the floor sometimes, so I heartily encourage mashing the X button when in doubt. Still have no idea where to go for the wind magic, but I have a feeling the water magic lies in Lake Noel.
Add: And I was right! But the wind magic still remains at large and I'm running out of places to check. I'm also wondering where the other two Ichirus dealies are and what key opens those brown-and-green chests... but the wind magic is the top priority.
