What about the Nintendo version of Tetris? That was never released in Japan. The Bullet Proof Software version, however, was.

I suppose by itself it wasn't released in Japan, even the Super NES version was never released in Japan. Dr. Mario was released alone on the SFC as a "Nintendo Power" game (which I've heard actually is Tetris & Dr. Mario but with Tetris dummied out). However, the Tetris mode of the Japanese-exclusive "Tetris 2+BomBliss" is quite similar to Nintendo Tetris that one must wonder if the two are related (well, and that T2B includes a two-player mode, which it seems was partially developed but not finished and thus disabled in the Nintendo version).

If you're including games that were technically released in Japan but in an entirely different form, Maniac Mansion surely counts.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've updated the list with all of the additions from this thread plus more, and I'm going to do some research into the unlicensed games, to weed out the ones that actually were released for the Famicom (which should be reflected the next time I update the list). Games that received graphic changes are debatable; games that got a full overhaul between regions are acceptable, since the reworkings practically made them brand new games - for example, Moeru Oniisan/Circus Caper and Power Blazer/Power Blade would count; Magic John/Totally Rad wouldn't.
jorpho: I'm not overly familiar with the Famicom version of Maniac Mansion, but I was under the impression that not too much had been changed between regions. Is there a comparison between the NES and Famicom versions anywhere?
kingmike: that list of PAL-exclusive NES games is perfect. I'm already in the process of removing the games that came out in Japan as well, so I should have a workable PAL-only exclusive list soon. The FDS to NES cart list is moving along now too.
johnmoran: not only were Raid on Bungeling Bay and Hudson Hawk released on the Famicom, so was Spot (released as Spot: The Game, by Bulletproof Software). It's also worth pointing out that there is a Famicom Airwolf game, but it's completely different from its U.S. counterpart.

Is there a comparison between the NES and Famicom versions anywhere? Well, there's www.hardcoregaming101.net/maniacmansion/maniacmansion.htm for starters. The game has definitely been rewritten from scratch – the US NES version is sufficiently similar to other releases that it's actually playable with ScummVM; the Famicom version is not.

I wouldn't call the Bunch Games....games exclusives because they were made and from what I gather released as unlicensed games in Taiwan by the programmer, Sachen.

It even has a (kinda fucked up) unique game over screen when all your kids croak, which I think is funny .

jorpho: that's all the proof I need. Added w/ notation.
Rey: didn't know about that one. Thanks! Added w/ notation.
apachacha: still researching the Bunch/Sachen games (along with some of the other unlicensed games) to see if any were U.S. exclusives. The next update I make should have those revisions.
johnmoran: good calls there! I knew about Caveman Games being an NES exclusive, but had kind of forgotten it existed until now. Same thing with Darkman.

For the FDS list, how about we also list the games that were released in Japan on both cartridge and disk formats:
The Legend of Zelda Castlevania Bio Miracle Bokuette Upa

Yo! Noid on NES is also completely different (graphically) on Famicom. In Japan it was called Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru, and the main character was a ninja who used a bird as his weapon. The game got a classic 80s advertising overhaul and the main character became the mascot for Dominoes Pizza, and the bird changed into a yo-yo. It was a favorite of mine years ago, and it's not too bad, really.

vnisanian2001: I'm debating on that. I may incorporate that idea as a subcategory.
1upsuper: I've included it, along with a few other games that had received extensive graphic makeovers for overseas release, like Kid Klown and Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular. On a side note, I own Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru, and it's a fun little game. Never really played Yo! Noid, though.
First post has been updated with the current list. I'm still researching the pirate games. Metal Fighter is so far the only one that I've found that got a Japanese release. All the others, so far, have been listed as Asian or Australian releases, which isn't the same.
