As TheChosen already mentioned, getting your car stolen in Reno is a good thing! If you buy it back from the carjacker, he'll then sell you an upgrade that makes the car even better (combined with the Fuel Cell Regulator from Klamath, the car becomes extremely efficient). On top of that, he becomes a reliable source of the fuel cells needed to charge the car. Him and San Fransisco are the two best places to get the ammo needed for car charging.
As for Wanamingos, they're definitely tough, but they can be beaten even at relatively low levels! Wanamingos have a huge amount of innate DR, and thus the strategy for defeating them is very similar to fighting Deathclaws: targeted attacks to the eyes. Wanamingos run away when blinded, and a good critical ignores all DR, making them much easier to beat... I was able to clear out the mine at level 10~11 by punching everything to death.

Again, thanks for the tips.
I'll go into it more in the podcast (maybe) but I never really played PC games past the early 90's and even then it was limited to adventure games. I'm not a very good self-starter with things like Fallout 2 that offer you a lot of options on how to play it, but also expect you to do a lot of trial and error and fail and restart and stuff. It's especially hard for me these days to play something like that (without a guide, or at least some good hints) because it's harder and harder to find the time to play games as time goes on.
At the same time I'm enjoying the game quite a bit, but it does help to know about things like the radiation because it's not spelled out for you in the book about how to manage or deal with it - just that radiation sickness exists and there are two medicines to treat/manage it. It also was a surprise to me that animals could deal you radiation damage, although I guess it shouldn't have been. Without y'alls help I probably would have freaked out down the line or made a major mistake and had to restart.

I had friends that played through it and other PC games in college(1), but I mostly stuck to weeaboo console JRPGs because my computer had Windows NT and could run Half Life and Diablo and that skiing game, and that was it. I ended up tracking down a used copy of Fallout 2 years ago prior to Fallout 3, when everyone and their mother was going on about how great Fallout 2 was. I remember reading the booklet back then as well and was kind of perplexed; it tells you plenty to get started but if you're not into RPGs and/or don't know the ins and outs of character building then you're gonna still have trouble. As I recall, I managed to make it to the Den but stopped shortly after that big shootout. Why, I don't remember. One of my biggest problems (not sure if this made it into the King's Field podcast) is that I'm fucking awful when I'm given more freedom, which is another reason I don't care for WRPGs as much. I hate character building because I suck shit at it. I'm a very indecisive person by nature, and it's even worse in video games when there's typically less restrictions than in real life. This is why I had an awful time in Final Fantasy X at the part where you were forced to play as Kimahri, because I basically put points into everything and made a really mediocre character that couldn't hold his own in a battle. After playing using Feynman's recommended build, I learned that my trouble with the trials was for the same reason - before I was building someone who had limited skill in multiple fields but wasn't very good at any of them. Anyway this is a good challenge. I like the game so far and I've been looking forward to playing more of it. (1) Similar situation with Deus Ex - a good friend of mine and former roommate apparently listened to the Deus Ex podcast and contacted me afterward, saying something to the effect of "I'm so sorry. I had no idea you never played DX. I failed you."

Time to bring out the big guns. I remember them being vulnerable to fire, so flamethrower should do the trick. Alternatively you could try other big guns like rocket launchers and miniguns. They seem to be extremely invulnerable to everything else but fire, including explosives to the face.

I was Mr. Nice Guy, so I got the following endings: - Arroyo and the ex-Vault 13 residents thrive. Yaaaaaaay.
- The Den stops sucking and becomes a decent place since I wiped out the slavers.
- Modoc and the Slags make a thirving farming community.
- Gecko remains independent.
- Vault City gets annexed by NCR. That's what you get for being such douchebags!
- Redding becomes a prosperous city and kicks its Jet thanks to me finding a cure.
- New Reno is taken over by Mrs. Bishop's bastard child.
- Broken Hills remains safe and happy until the uranium mines run dry, then everybody leaves.
- NCR expands its influence.
- The vagrants of Vault 15 become self-sufficient after joining forces with NCR.
- The super smart deathclaws are all dead. Well, except for my buddy Goris. Not my fault!
- The Shi of San Fransisco successfully develop plants to reduce the radition in their area. This allows them to become a strong independent power.

So after returning from a week of Skiing, I've started back up where I stopped in Fallout 2: The Den. I know, I'm really not very far yet. I did a few quests, including the gang warfare battle, but I'm running into a bit of a wall as to how to actually get to talk to Vic. I'm not a particularly good people person, but I'm already carrying Vic's Radio and I would expect there should be some way to put two and two together. I don't think branding myself a Slaver is really in my best interest, and I know I can't take the slavers in a straight-out fight right now.

You can pay off Vic's debt by Talking to Metzger after going into the Slaver's guild, having Vic repair the radio, then talking to Metzger again. You'll need to pony up quite a bit of cash to free Vic. Vic will join your party afterwards, and he's a pretty useful member during the early game.

Problem is, the conversation with Metzger goes nowhere. He basically just says screw off.
EDIT: Nevermind. You don't really need permission to talk to Vic. You can just walk around and talk to him through the window.
Of course, with my horrible bartering skills I needed to trade off all the 10mm pistols I got from the Gang fight to pay the debt and wasn't able to actually arm Vic with anything other than a knife. Something else should turn up soonish, I guess.

See, I just murdered everybody in the slaver's den and just took Vic with me. A few people in The Den will give you special rewards if you do it, too. It's a tough fight, so be ready to save and reload depending on how your rolls go, but the items you can pick up definately make it worth it. Not REALLY spoilers, but just in case, here's what I did: I went up to Metzger, saved, tried stealing his shotgun until I managed to nab it, which took a few tries. Then I went into one of the bedrooms, took cover near the wall to use it as a chokepoint, and started shooting people up. Eventually, everybody went into 'run away' mode, so I could just pick them all off and win the fight.

Ugh, I'm really starting to lose patience with the game. After rescuing Vic, I'm still a meagre level 3 with a borrowed leather Jacket and the starting spear. I'm nearly useless in any combat scenario and I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall after leaving the Den.

Also I finally found out how to do targeted attacks (right click on the weapon icon at the bottom to switch attack types) and it really, really, really helps. I just rescued Vic and I'm not quite sure where to go to next; I need to find the part for the car, too. EDIT: What the hell is the best way to deal with Golden Geckos? I've tried targeting different parts and haven't had much luck.

Golden geckos are best dealt with by attacking, then walking away. At least that's what's has worked best for me. I'm not sure which part of the animal is weakest since I don't usually bother with aimed shots. As for where to go next, both New Reno and Vault City should have appeared on your map after talking with people in The Den. I recommend heading towards Vault City first since it's slightly closer. There are a few places to stop on the way that offer a good number of easy quests, too. Be sure to stock up on equipment before heading out, especially healing items!
