i just checked out the rygar article here and it was very good but for the fact there is no mention of the commodore 64 version of the game alongside arcade mark3 and so on. i remember back in the day myself and my mates loved playing rygar arcade in the local fish and chip shop but when it came to ports to play at home well that is a different matter. i don't think we got the mark3 version for pal master system so in those days i didn't even know that version existed. we waited for the nes version but then we were unhappy with,it. don't get me wrong it's a decent game on it's own merit but not the same game as the arcade game we had grown to love so the nes version at the time we kinda dismissed due to the fact it was not the game we wanted and i only came to appreciate the nes game many years later. anyway back then my mate owned a commodore 64 and i remember he had gone for a day out in cardiff (wales) and when he got home he came around my house and he was saying i just purchased rygar in cardiff so lets go and play it and we did. tbh it ain't a great port but at least the programmers tried to bring the same game as the arcade to the c64 home computer and as far as i knew back then was that the c64 version was the only way to play the true rygar game at home. shame rygar was never ported to the 16 bit consoles but i guess the dust had settled regarding rygar by the time the genesis and super nintendo came out. thankfully these days we can play the original arcade game in all it's glory via mame emulation on our pc's or in my choice the original xbox.

The Rygar article was written several years ago, back before we comprehensively covered home computer ports. When we go back and reformat the articles to the newer template, typically we revise the article to include them.

interesting. secret of the stars is one of the rpgs i never really played for the snes. i will have to fire my sd2snes up and give this game a go after all these years. i recently also stumbled across the cheat.dat options for xbox mame. i may finally be able to complete the arcade version of rygar. i've always loved this game but never mastered it enough to be able to beat it due to the fact the game does not allow you to continue after level 20 or so. i think the game has 26 levels so for me 6 difficult levels with no continue option is out of the question. i remember some players beating this game on the old arcade machine years ago and fair play to them they were good players. we were all still in schoool at the time and those players spent a lot of lunch money playing rygar in the fish and chip shop instead of buying food, i guess we all did. seemed worth it at the time. was a golden age of arcade gaming for me back then. rygar, cobra command, wonderboy, wonderboy in monsterland, bubble bobble, pac-land, toki, double dragon, rastan, rtype games, the speed rumbler just to name a few. the arcades used to rule back then fair play.

"Seriously, there isn't much to it. Just stay alive, killing enemies if necessary, and get to the end of the stage."
Isn't this what all arcade games is about? This kind of game lives and dies by how well a balance is struck between repetition and introducing new elements and it is here that Rygar really shines. When you get into it and can breeze through the levels you start to appreciate just how much the developers managed to squeeze out of such a basic concept. New enemies (with new patterns of attack) is introduced at just the right moment all throughout the game.
The SMS version isn't that far off the arcade version either. There is less enemies and they are introduced in a different order but the basic gameplay is kept quit well. From a pure arcade point of view it plays a whole lot better than the Nes game. A combination of the two (without the overhead levels) would have been something really nice.
