Alrighty, cast my vote for River King. I just can't think of much to talk about if Dragon Slayer wins, since by all indication, it seems to be a pretty straightforward Dragon Quest clone. One with a redbook audio soundtrack, sure, but River King is far more innovative in comparison. Less of a pain to emulate too.

River King Solid: Fish Eater
Might be fun if its as fun and addicting as the GB versions of Harvest Moon.

Since River King won, I feel a tutorial is in order. The bad news is I don't know crap about fishing. The good news is that here's the manual: vimm.net/manual/?p=details&id=2587Update: And after about ten tries, I have not caught a SINGLE fish yet. Those jerks seem to have a stupid habit of stealing my bait the INSTANT I try to reel them in. If anyone successfully catches fish and has a decent formula for it, let us know ASAP.

I had the same problem - I bought it on clearance at Target back in de day and tried it once before giving up on it. Which sucks because then presumably my in-game sister died. Now is the time for second chances.

FYI: The game is also available on 3DS virtual console. I was about to check the price, but found out my 3DS needs a system update EDIT: Update finished. It's $5. I may grab it and join in. We'll see. The video on the eShop does not make the game look particularly appealing.

I remember back when this was released, that there was quite a bit of excitement over the fact that this game could do some sort of data transfer with one of the GBC Harvest Moon games. Or am I crazy?

Those jerks seem to have a stupid habit of stealing my bait the INSTANT I try to reel them in. If anyone successfully catches fish and has a decent formula for it, let us know ASAP. Okay, I started the game and I've succeeded in catching a few fish. Here's how it goes: 1. Cast your line. At the start of the game, keep your floater equipped so that your line will slowly drift downstream (the floater is equipped by default). Try to drop your line so that it will drift right in front of a fish... not so close that it scares the fish when your line hits the water, but not too far away either (or the fish will probably swim too far away to notice your bait). 2. When a fish becomes interested in your bait, it will start swimming is circles around it. After a few moments of this, it will stop and appear directly on top of your lure. Press A! 3. You'll go to the screen where you actually have to reel the fish in. The technique used to reel in a fish is to let it tire itself out, and only reel it in when it's resting. If the fish is actively pulling away from you, trying to reel it in will likely break your hook off, and will also keep the fish in a panicked state, making it more likely that it will swim far enough away to steal your bait and escape. Keep the line slack until the fish slows down and starts to stop, THEN start reeling it in by holding down the A button. Repeat until the fish is caught. Also, a note on bait: you buy bait in stacks of 9, not individually, so when you see that replacement larvae bait costs 25g, don't panic! That's 25g for a full set of 9 bait, not 25g each!

Well, I'm doing better with catching fish, but it seems I'm having a hard time even catching fish in the first place. I'm not sure if grubs are ineffective bait or whatever, but I haven't caught anything for the past ten minutes or so I've played the game. Do we have any tips for getting fish to bite?

I had the most luck in the first area using mainly worms, larvae, and red larvae as bait. Note that you'll also want to buy a stack of small hooks, as the Blowfish, Goby, Bullhead, and C. Trout (the last is a mandatory catch) will slip off your line if you try to use either of the larger hooks.
I also had luck with the lure rod using the spinner lure and the worm lure.
I think I might start over and keep a detailed fishing log of exactly where I catch each fish type (and what bait/tackle I use).

I admit, I'm a bit afraid to go into the next area even if I have the means to do so. I want to focus on catching more fish and fighting weaker predators in the first area to bulk up. However, I have a stupid question: CAN your sister actually die if you take too long? I don't know if there's any penalty for dilly-dallying, but this doesn't seem like the sort of game where rushing is appropriate.

There is no time limit. Your sister's illness isn't a game mechanic, just a thinly-veiled excuse to go on a Magical Fishing Journey.*
Anyway, I managed to catch the following fish in the first area uses the indicated bait/tackle:
Trout - between the two bridges (worm/larvae) Gi. Trout - between the two bridges (worm/larvae) Blowfish - past the eastern bridge (worm/red larvae, small hook) Rainbow Trout - far east end of the area (worm) Char - between the two bridges, past eastern bridge (worm/larvae) Bullhead - past western bridge (larvae, small hook) C. Trout - past western bridge (larvae, small hook) Goby - far southwest just before transition to next zone, requires raft (grub, small hook)
I don't know if that's all the fish in the region, but that's what I could find. Also note that not all fish only show up in one location (you can find Trout and Char basically everywhere), just where I found the highest concentration of certain fish, although most fish definitely only appear in specific parts of the map.
* journey may not actually be magical

Probably going to start again and use Feynman's list over here (although I should note the manual has fish locations in it at least for the first 4 locations - not bait types though). Fish refuse to get caught, sanity waning, desire to grenade fish rising.

I've grown quite fond of lure and fly fishing. Not as much range on the cast as the large standard rod, but you get both the ability to reel and current drifting, which makes it easier to maneuver your line to the target fish. Plus, you don't need to keep buying bait! Also, more fishing log:
Area 2 (Lake)
T. Stklbk - marsh near town (mayfly [dry]/stonefly [wet]/larvae) Sea Bass - west of town (worm, spinner lure) B. Gill - midwest area (worm, worm lure, small hook) G. Trout - southwest of town (worm, spinner lure) L. Trout - west/soutwest of town (worm lure, minnow lure) B. S. Brm - soutwest of town (worm lure, spinner lure) B. Bass - around small island in middle of lake (worm lure) Darter - Southern region (spoon lure, spinner lure) Minnow - Southeast marsh (worm lure) Smelt - Around bridge exiting town (stonefly [wet])
