Puzzle games? Tons. Falling blocks games? No. Thanks, so Tetris invented the falling puzzle genre, while games like Compile's Puyo Puyo, Nintendo's Panel de Pon, Axela's StarSweep, Face's Money Idol Exchanger and Data East's Chain Reaction/Magical Drop games and franchises expanded the falling puzzle genre by adding chain combos and battle systems. And what about these genres? Video slot machine - Too many to think which started it, but I know that they are based on mechanical slot machines. Then came Pachislots, Pachinko and Slot Machine hybrids. Scrolling horizontal shoot 'em up - Did Namco's Xevious started it? Interactive movie - Either Kinoautomat (1967) or Astron Belt (1982-1983) were the first ones. Some lightgun-based interactive movies like the 1974 Wild Gunman were also created before Dragon's Lair. First/third-person viewed fighting games - While the Punch-Out!! franchise started it, it was only a boxing sports game. But there was Dragon Ball Z: V.R.V.S., while Virtua Fighter 3 contains a first-person view mode. This type of fighting game didn't succeed over side-viewed ones and like interactive movies, it became obsolete. Breeding games - Pokemon's idea was created back in Satoshi Tajiri's childhood, during the Golden Age of Arcade Games I guess, but wasn't produced until the mid-'90s. Edutainment - One of the most hated genres.

Edutainment wasn't always hated. The games from The Learning Company (Math Blaster, Reader Rabbit) were generally well regarded, and so was the Where in ___ is Carmen Sandiego?

Then perhaps G4 was joking when they played the "I Hate School" song while showing some edutainment games, especially Oregon Trail.

Scrolling horizontal shoot 'em up - Did Namco's Xevious started it? If by horizontal you mean vertical, then yes. Interactive movie - Either Kinoautomat (1967) or Astron Belt (1982-1983) were the first ones. Some lightgun-based interactive movies like the 1974 Wild Gunman were also created before Dragon's Lair. In theory, Mr. Sardonicus, although the interactivity was apparently a fake. Breeding games - Pokemon's idea was created back in Satoshi Tajiri's childhood, during the Golden Age of Arcade Games I guess, but wasn't produced until the mid-'90s. Before Pokemon, you would only "breed" one "creature". That I think started with Princess Maker. Edutainment - One of the most hated genres. Why would anyone ever hate edutainment games as a genre? That makes no sense whatsoever.

Sorry, I got mixed up with the shoot 'em ups.
Hmmm. Mr. Sardonicus. I may have to tell my mother about it who is a movie addict.
Princess Maker reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake for the Atari 2600.
Read my previous post.

I always thought they should make Where in Hell is Carmen Sandiego? and include Dante's Inferno as the reference book. When I was a kid, I actually had a game called Where in Hell is Carmen Santiago (or something that was similar to avoid copyright infringement). I never understood it and only have vague recollections...I can't find anything about it anywhere on the internet. It was a first person adventure game where you explored hell.

Breeding games - Pokemon's idea was created back in Satoshi Tajiri's childhood, during the Golden Age of Arcade Games I guess, but wasn't produced until the mid-'90s. Megami Tensei did that in 1987. Though you could only get monsters through negotiations (which seemed to have randomized results anyways, from what I played). Pokemon certainly opened up the genre with more forgiving mechanics (the MT games also made you keep a supply of some kind of monster-kryptonite around or you'd lose them, and I don't think they level beyond when they joined?). And by open up, I mean the MT games would've probably been considered too hardcore for a western audience. Even though the first Last Bible spin-off game arrived in the US (as Revelations: The Demon Slayer) a year after Pokemon, it doesn't sound like it was that well-known (and Atlus hasn't bothered to re-release the English version on 3DS VC, despite releasing both GBC games in Japan).

Searching on Yahoo I found it in one of those huge Apple II disc image file collections. Not sure about posting links since I know nothing about the site it is on, but you can find it using their search.
