Judging by the GC9X #30 thread, there's a fair interest in playing Mega Turrican from the various forum-goers. So let's play Mega Turrican! Mega Turrican is run-and-gun shooter with a grappling hook, a great soundtrack, and somewhat more open-than-normal level design. Mega Turrican is the second console-native Turrican game, after Super Turrican for the SNES. It was backported to the Amiga (and apparently that version came out first), but this is clearly the best way to play this game. It is available on Wii Virtual Console for 800 points ($8 to most people), as well as the usual sources of Retro games. I am completely biased, but I'd say it's well worth this. Note: This game supports the 6-button controller. The extra buttons make it much easier to use the screen-clearing bomb attack. I believe the rest of the controls are customizable and fairly obvious. This game has a morph-ball like ability (activated with down + jump), which turns you into a spiky wheel of death and (if memory serves) also makes you invulnerable. You only have a limited amount of time in this mode, but it can be invaluable in boss fights to get out of a tight situation. Here is the multilingual European manual for the game: www.nemmelheim.de/turrican/files/mtmanual/Strangely, it doesn't mention the bomb attack. Could be an omission, or it could be a difference in the EU version of the game. It's certainly in the NA version.

I'm for this, I'd rather play this than Tekwar.

I'm in a really dark place right now and honestly I don't need to go through the trouble of setting up and playing TekWar at the moment.
Zerker, would you be interested in guest hosting a bootleg podcast?

Just for the record though I'm going to have to talk about how the Turrican Armor's helmet looks like a glans.

I can't get over the WTF Helmet.

Joestar, I have no experience, but that might be a possibility. I guess we can coordinate on IRC to see what might work best. Skye, I'd go ahead and give the game a shot. The Helmet is not an indication of quality

The Helmet is not an indication of quality Sounds good. Basically if you have Skype and a microphone, it can be done. Also the grappling hook is the sign of quality. EDIT: Also, do we want to move this thread to the GC9x section? I'd hate for this to get overrun by other posts and lost.

Sure, go ahead and move it. I didn't want to presume to create a thread in the seemingly-reserved GC9x subforum

And now the thread is moved.
So I "played" the entire game (again), but got game over at the final boss. Since it's been a while, I got tripped up on a couple things, so I figure I will share to save you guys some of the trouble:
In Stage 1, there's a part with some flame jets and platforms just sitting on the floor between them. Step lightly on those platforms and DO NOT stay on them. They will squish you on the ceiling.
In Stage 2 take your time for the first half of the level. There are lots of pits, and the water jets can screw you up. However, if you are on a platform that starts to tilt, either get to the center or get off; it will flip around and drop you.
In the first part of stage 3 (flying platforms), the third or fourth platform goes straight down. The next platform is to the left, not right. If you hesitate too long, you die.
In the alien train level (Stage 4-2), there's one pit that is too wide. What "looks" like an enemy will come flying at you; but it's actually a platform! Jump on!
The giant "goomba" robot in Stage 5 is vulnerable on the top. I beat him by getting behind, jumping up, and blasting point blank. Watch for electricity arching up the back once you're on it.
I don't really have any advice for the last three bosses. They are quite difficult to dodge. I abused the plasma wheel for the robot skeleton, since I couldn't figure out a good way to dodge his energy blasts and still hit him
In general, don't be afraid to use your bombs and plasma wheel ability. Bombs restock every life, and the plasma wheel is only useful for *some* bosses (stage 3 in particular). In stages 2 and 4 (water and alien), plasma wheel is useless against the bosses, so go nuts in the regular level. It can be very useful against the bubble crabs in Stage 2, or the facehuggers in Stage 4.

I've beaten it a couple of times before, but great game. In addition to the above, always be on the lookout for hidden paths. There's less exploration than in the prequels but still a lot to find.
