www.hardcoregaming101.net/obsidian/obsidian.htmSince we're been talking about bizarre Japanese 1st person adventure games, I figured it'd be neat to dig up some of the lesser known games of that style that were made in America. Obsidian is regarded as one of the best Myst-type games, largely for its graphic design, which is weird and fantastic.

I remember reading about this in PC Gamer when it came out. I was never really into Myst so I passed on this one. I seem to recall their primary criticism was that the first "world" had puzzles based on instinct which made it very difficult for some and very easy for others. Not sure exactly how that plays out, or if that is even accurate.

My uncle's really into this, or rather, he could never get it out of his head, the way these weird and fantastic games often do.

One of my favourites, it even includes an area in the game that serves as a 4th wall break with concept art from the game, cool stuff. Also has a few metapuzzle puzzles which is cool too.

Hmmm... imma gonna have to try this.
Has it been digitally distributed somewhere? Does it need emulation?

Hmmm... imma gonna have to try this. Has it been digitally distributed somewhere? Does it need emulation? I don't believe there have been any releases beyond the original boxed release, given this was a SegaSoft release. For emulation, I suppose a Windows 95/98 VirtualBox would work fine, but I don't recall this game using more than QuickTime videos. There's also a Mac version, for Classic Mac OS.

man, I love that there's seemingly a million of these off the wall Myst esque adventure games from that era and yet how lucky are we to get even one game that creative these days? ah, the 90's....
here's hoping Good Old Games picks this up someday
