www.siliconera.com/2014/04/14/dead-body-2-ps-vita-coming-west/As you know already by now, Sony confirmed that "Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke 2" for the PS Vita, which is releasing later this summer in Japan, will be coming over in 2014 to the US and Europe as "Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines", alongside Freedom Wars and Soul Sacrifice Delta. This RPG is the sequel to the 1999 Japan-only PS1 Alfa System RPG revolving about a bloodline cursed to die faster unless they manage to slay the demon who cursed them. That first game was remade for the PSP in 2011 as an enhanced remake (that seems to be nothing like the Popolocrois PSP mess). Vic Ireland said his multiple offers to localize that one were rejected, so seeing that one outside fan-translations is highly unlikely for now. (I'm surprised how they used the fan nickname for the game. It's like Enix released it as "DraQue"... but the original title is so long and obtuse so that's a bit forgiven.) Anyone who played the original? What are your thoughts about it?

I've had the PS1 original sitting on my shelf for a few years since I grabbed it for a few bucks, but honestly was too intimidated to play something so unusually structured, and I don't remember seeing a FAQ. Maybe I'll give it a shot now that I've read about how you're supposed to approach it.

It's a weird new trend that I guess is trying to appeal to the weeaboo crowd. Same thing is going on with anime and manga too. Titles are left untranslated, sometimes using the Japanese abbreviations in the West (Watamote, Yowapeda, Soni-Ani, just to pull a few recent examples from anime/manga). I think it's pretty dumb myself. I don't see why they don't go with "Over My Dead Body" like Siliconera was using. That's a catchy enough title. Instead they go with an abbreviation of native Japanese that means absolutely nothing to Westerners?

The English manga release of Watamote doesn't use the Japanese nickname. Which I kind of think it should, because I have no idea what to shorten the actual English title to.
But in this case, "Over My Dead Body" is such a cool translation that it's a shame they didn't go with it.

"Over My Dead Body" would have been a way better title. It sticks in your head and actually means something to an English-speaking brain, as well as being a bit of a pun, whereas "Oreshika" may as well be an arbitrary nonsense word to an English-speaker.

If this is anything like the first game, my advice would be: don't go into it expecting a deep story, intricate locations to explore or highly-developed characters. This is a gameplay game all the way, and a VERY GOOD ONE at that... but the unique art style and cool concept might attract the wrong crowd. In a way, Oreshika has more in common with western RPGs than JRPGs, in that it's all about micromanagement and planning. It's simple and easy to get the hang of, but deep and addictive, with a really thick, artsy atmosphere that draws you in. I think the crowd who dislikes Conception II but really *wanted* to like it will probably love Oreshika, as the two games are oddly kind of similar in pacing and basic gameplay. Oreshika is just a bit more... elegant, I guess? Artistic, maybe? Not to say Conception II is bad, as I actually think Conception II likely has the better battle system (the first Oreshika's is very simplistic), but if you were turned off by the sexually-charged nature of Conception II and wanted something in a similar vein that's more "high-brow," this could be exactly the game you're looking for. I'm pretty excited to play it, myself, and will definitely be buying the English version to show my support. To my knowledge, these guys only have three unique games under their belt thus far (Lindacube, Oreshika and Abarenbou Princess), but all three of them are just so refreshingly unique and interesting, and buck so many trends, that I can't help but want to give them my money. -Tom

But yeah, I've been wanting to play Oreshika for a few years now, but the language barrier always stopped me, I'm really happy and surprised that the sequel is coming overseas. EDIT: About the name change, wasn't "Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke" already a nipponisation (?) of "Over my dead body" ?

Alfa System has been around a surprisingly long time, and they were also behind Project Horned Owl and Elemental Gearbolt.
