I was playing through some of my old horror games and realised that there seems to no discussion what so ever for some obscure gems. Such as... Dark Tales From The Lost Soul. - A game set out like an anthology horror movie. Contains 3 seperate stories connected by a strange live action segment where the host of a weird club introduces the next story. Very strange on rails gameplay too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtEx39Cez2gKowloon's Gate - A cyberpunk / RPG / Horror game set in Kowloon. Lots of weird locations and characters and some strange combat. Played in first person and again its on rails. You pick an arrow and the game guides you down certain paths. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TXGIWlJcncNight Head : The Labyrinth - This is the most obscure horror game i've come across. Pretty much no information online about it. It's based on an X-files type show from japan. Again played in the first person. A sort of point and click style gameplay. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBtjir4p4moAlso The Twilight Syndrome games are very overlooked.

I think I've been mentioning the game a lot around here, but I really recommend Hellnight (Dark Messiah in Japan) for PSX. In a way, it's a precursor to the modern first-person horror games where you have to run away from a monster. In addition, the story is quite intriguing and the way you uncover the mystery is done in an excellent fashion. There's also a part that, though likely to stem from dungeon crzwlers, reminded me of the end-game of Silent Hill 1.
Not sure if it's obscure enough for the OP's tastes though.

HellNight / Dark Messiah is a flawed game, but its background is indeed interesting - especially past a certain point in the game.
I've had my eyes on Kowloon's Gate and Twilight Syndrome for a while now, but yeah - they're both Japan-exclusive and text-heavy. That sort of weird untranslated games is one of the main reasons I'm learning Japanese.

The video I posted up there of Kowloon's Gate is from my own playthrough. If you ever get stuck you can use it I'm Hopefully going to get some gameplay of Twilight Syndrome Saikai up soon. That has a lot less dialogue and text than the other TS games. Also, I love Hellnight, I picked up a copy a while ago, great fun. The team behind Hellnight did another great game on the dreamcast called "deSPIRIA". Another interesting and sadly overlooked title. I also hope to get my hands on ...Iru! sometime soon.

Ah, I remember trying ...Iru! but obviously couldn't go very far. I also remember trying a somewhat similar game called Schrödinger no Neko - that title is awesome - but, again, I couldn't read the text so I couldn't do much.

I wish someone would make a new game set in Kowloon. If there's any place ripe for horror it's that city.

All the claustrophobic alleys and narrow corridors are really creepy.

Echo Night as a franchise tends to lack representation in the popular media, considering it's a weaponless horror game with lots of creepy touches. I like what you're doing man, if you know (or are learning) some Japanese it'd be great to get a few subtitled in explanations of dialogue that's been spoken/onscreen in the games.

Check out Chris's Survival Horror Quest or even here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Horror_video_game for some releatively unheard stuff. Also, I was reminded of this one yesterday. Ghost Temple - A Chinese action/adventure is set in a horror context against the background of Chinese traditions... Looks a bit like Onimusha or Kuon. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCnKOVcDb88Zaphie series - A Korean horror adventure series with a creepy atmostphere. The first one plays like a traditional adventure game, but the second eschews that in favor of more Silent Hill-like gameplay. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJsNLChDOb4

I've never actually played it due to it being prohibitively expensive these days but I've always been curious about the game Rule of Rose and have been kicking myself ever since it came out for not buying it at the time it was new (and thus not outrageously expensive)
I came close to snatching it on Ebay once but I got sniped at the last second, I was mighty pissed when THAT happened let me tell you...

My copy of Rule of Rose I beat and than stashed once I found out how pricey it was. And now I can't find it. Mind you the game is pretty annoying gameplay wise and it's one of the few games I'd recommend people just watch on youtube if they're that interested in it.

Deep Fear for the Saturn all the way. Very atmospheric, but it's also the closest thing you can get to an old-school Resident Evil game, even the voice acting. I highly recommend it.
As for the Twilight Syndrome games, I've always anted to play them considering they were made by Clock Tower's developer, Human Entertainment. Sigh... if only I had the time to learn proper japanese.

I have both Echo Night games but i haven't gotten around to recording anything yet. I actually know no japanese whatsoever, all the games are played blindly. I hope to learn a bit at some point but at the moment i'm too busy, I can barely get enough time to record anything.
I really want to play the Zaphie games but i can't find them anywhere, they look great.
Rule of Rose...I hear its very frustrating and considering the price i don't think i'll ever get my hands on it.
I remember Deep Fear. A decent Resident Evil Style game. I started playing Twilight Syndrome Saikai recently and it can easily be played with no knowledge of Japanese. Much easier to get through than the other TS games.
