www.hardcoregaming101.net/xargon/xargon.htmThe successor to Jill of the Jungle, one of the platformers released for IBM PCs during the mid-90s shareware era by Epic Megagames. Not as fondly remember, but not bad, according to the article. This was one I don't recall playing myself.

I played all three episodes at the time. It was one of these games that was nice enough to beat once, but not alluring enough to ever play again, and I never did... I also remember the music as the best part of the game, although the graphics are also not bad at all for the time.

My favorite part of this game will always be the little guitar riff that plays when you pick up fruit. Epic used to make picking up powerups just so FUN, between this and Jill of the Jungle.
I wish you picked up a gun in Gears of War and a tiger roared for no reason.

Epic's games had the weirdest selections of sound effects, and yet they were more awesome for it. You've just got to love the "*thud* Oof!" when you throw a rock at a giant ladybug, or that weird moaning noise that the fish make when you shoot them with submarine bullets. Though, yes, the guitar fruit is my favorite, and I also really like the explosion sounds, even as low quality as they are.

I remember this game was LOUD. I had a few times where I'd boot it up and the music would blast my whole house. That got me in trouble a few times, heh.

Ah, Xargon. Here's some useful information for you guys. First, the game is now free ( released by the Author), including source code. Second, I created maps for this game by mercilessly hacking apart the resource files, and released the resulting tool on my web site. You can also use said tool to extract the sprites from the game, if desired. I documented my process on the vgmaps forums if anyone's interested. ... and Sac, even back then, most speakers still had volume knobs

There's something that's just so satisfying about the death cackle, the "*thud* oof!", the "ohhwhoa" sound the fish make, and even the sound that monsters make when they turn around. And of course, to reiterate one more time, the fruit guitar sound was amazing. Ah, Xargon. Here's some useful information for you guys. I ran into your VGMaps forum topic while I was doing research for this article -- excellent work!

True that you can change the volume. But when Xargon wasn't the 1st game you played, and the sound was ok for all the others, and you forget how loud Xargon can be....
Its just loud than most of its contemporaries, at least that what I found when I used to play it.

The name didn’t ring a bell at all, but seeing the pictures I remember playing it back in the day. Must have been from one of those shareware CDs. I remember feeling it was a nice evolution of the Onesimus / Jill of the Jungle formula, but didn’t really dig the stiff controls common to those. I’m sure I cleared the first episode a few times nonetheless.
