A couple weeks ago, a rom was released for a Japanese prototype of the cult classic "Monster Party" - years ago a copy of the prototype surfaced on Yahoo Auction Japan but was hoarded by the buyer; earlier this year, however, another prototype surfaced and was purchased by the Nolan brothers, who brought the news to the NintendoAge forums. And there was much rejoicing.
To celebrate this, we did an impromptu livecast a few days after the release, where I played through the prototype, and we talked about the differences between the proto and the final, US version - it ran long and we finished it the next night along with a playthrough of the "final" retail version we know and love.
At any rate, this is a pretty comprehensive look at the prototype; at each of the major boss fights or other areas where changes were made, we have a simultaneous comparison video. In addition, we go into trivia and references in the game that nobody else has touched so far - if you have to watch one video about Monster Party in your entire life, make it this one. Or else.
Just FYI, this was my first livecast - we had some audio difficulties for the first 45 minutes or so - the rest is nice and clear. The volume/gain for my (Jojo's) audio was set too high for the first night's recording, so you'll have to adjust the volume at the "intermission".
Hope you enjoy the show - please let me know what you think!

Awesome. Good job man. I will say that I was disappointed that during the conversation about kyonshi that there was no mention of the classic Phantom Fighter.

Oh man that was a HUGE oversight, especially considering how much I love that game (and the fact that we brought up Mr. Vampire...). I'll see if I can re-upload without affecting the hits, and if so I'll put in a text and image overlay and credit you. Thanks for checking it out; I've been kind of freaked out about it so I appreciate the kind words!

so when did you mention me and haruna anno? IIRC it's at the end credits for the original game, so within the last 5 to 10 minutes of the video.

huh, I'm already 23 minutes in and haven't heard my lovely name!
EDIT: nevermind, you said 'last' not first. once again demonstrating my illiteracy! I wouldn't even have made the connection between Cream Haruna and Haruna Anno...

Finally got around to watching this! Good stuff. =)
I love the way Bert is at the door holding a bat like some kind of loan shark during the ending. I mean, it was like that in the official release of the game too, but still.
"Let's go again! ... or else."

So is the Otaku Killer to blame as the main reason this game did not get released in its native Japan?

I mean, it was like that in the official release of the game too, but still. "Let's go again! ... or else." Thanks man . Yeah, I also only recently noticed him slinging the bat over his shoulder at the beginning when they're flying; it makes him look like a thug, lol. So is the Otaku Killer to blame as the main reason this game did not get released in its native Japan? There's really no way to tell now, unless we're able to find one of those folks at Human and/or Bandai that were involved somehow (and assuming they even remember). Personally though I doubt it was a major factor - I'm looking at Chris McCovell's site and Japanese magazines had it slated for release in January/February 1989, well before Miyazaki was caught (and the resulting crackdown on violent media). If I had to hazard a guess, it was probably that they figured it wouldn't sell well, or it didn't fit their company "image" at the time, or something along those lines.

The NES was also near the end if its cycle in Japan at that time too, so they may have decided to focus on the SF.

Yeah, I got a really big grin when he changed his avatar to the dancing zombies a month or two back, that was one of my favorite things from the game . BTW, I didn't notice it before but looking at the REALLY early proto screens (again, on Chris McCovell's site where he had scans of old magazines) showed even more of a difference - the HUD at the bottom had a word bubble for dialog - from the looks of it, regular enemies would say stuff too... (there was a photo of an enemy getting attacked, and text below saying "you bastard!" or "jerk!").

So all the hoopla about this proto being released has gotten me pretty excited, hence the avatar change. In all honesty I was looking for a gif of the legs from the first stage but lucked out and found the dancing zombie. But definitely give the game a shot, its aged nicely and still very playable.
