You know this is part of a series with Blood of Bahamut on the DS, right?

Despite having a similar name and sharing the publisher, they aren't related.

I started playing this some months ago, and took a break after chapter 12 or so. One thing I was bit disappointed with was the Dragon raising system. It's really not that deep.

Great article! However I did not read anything about where it was released. Did this every make it to the states?

Nope, Japan only. Been fan translated for a while, though. Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin played a part in it, so there's a few Earthbound references sprinkled in, which apparently he now wishes he could go back and remove.

While I am thankful that a fan translation exists, I have to wonder if the game would benefit overall from a more Vagrant Story/FF4DS-style rewrite.

It would benefit from a localization that changed the name of "Princess Yoyo", that's for sure. Who's her brother, Prince Hulahoop? One of those games like the Mana sequel that magazines used to torture us by telling us how great they were and showing us pretty screenshots, all while they never came out of Japan.

Uh... I don't usually complain about style, but what's up with "the personal is political" at the beginning? Not only was that phrase coined in a very specific context that has nothing to do with the present subject matter, it also doesn't make sense in the article even when taken out of context.
Surely what the author means when he says that world conflicts affect the private lives of those fighting them is that "the political is personal".

Unless the author thought they were being clever by somehow throwing in a reference to either the Abortion Rights Movement or Saul Alinsky. As you said, neither of which have anything to do with a mid-90s JRPG.

I always wondered if the original japanese script also called for the old man to talk about Byuu's rear being so round.

I like the graphics and the plot twists in this, but the 'deep and tactical' combat is totally broken by the overpowered dragons...
