XCOM: UFO Defense (PC/PSX/Amiga)Originally planned by Julian Gollop as a sequel to Mythos Games' 1988 Laser Squad, the game mixes real-time management simulation with turn-based tactics. The player takes the role of commander of X-COM – a clandestine, international paramilitary organization defending Earth from alien invasion. Through the game, the player is tasked with issuing orders to individual X-COM troops in a series of turn-based tactical missions. At strategic scale, the player directs the research and development of new technologies, builds and expands X-COM's bases, manages the organization's finances and personnel, and monitors and responds to UFO activity. Putting my vote in for XCOM! And really, it's hard not to when you consider that: - The entire series is available for purchase on Steam!
- There's a great port of the game that makes playing it on modern systems pretty much hassle free!
- It received not one but two modern sequels/reboots!
- That not enough for you? How about this indie game, which is a huge love letter to the franchise!
- Exclamation points!!!
It's honestly hard to vote for anything else when you take all of these into account. :p

I voted Zelda because I own one of those but haven't played it. I'm bummed because I'd like to play VP, but I don't remember where my copy is (either version).

I'll vote Zelda just because I'm slightly more likely to play the game if it's on a handheld, and GameYob is cool.

X-COM! I'm already in the middle of Oracle of Ages, so I'm not interested in playing the sister game at the same time. And I've already played Valkyrie Profile. Of course, I'm also in the middle of Jagged Alliance 2, but it's at least SOMEWHAT different .

X-COM, because they spelled 'german' wrong on the language select screen, and that seems like a good first impression.

As for me, I've got to vote Valkyrie Profile because I've played XCOM to death. (Quite literally, I'm terrible at it and die a lot.) Hopefully my treachery(?) won't cause the vote to become imbalanced, lol.

WE'LL SEE.
Also, here's some awesome 90s intro goodness to hopefully sway some votes:

So here's another reason to vote for X-COM: a beta version of the failed X-COM: Alliance was released just a few years ago! Not sure how playable it was, but it'd be worth investigating. Also I forgot to mention the numerous clone and precursor series in my original post! If X-COM isn't enough, we also have Rebelstar, Laser Squad, AND the UFO series to tackle.

How hard is it to get into compared to day, Master of Orion?

Hard to say, it's a different sort of strategy game! However, if you play the original game without using any ports or hacks, the difficulties are broken apparently?

I was actually planning on using Dosbox. Broken in what way? EDIT: I found it with some quick searching. Apparently the difficulty is always set to Beginner in the DOS version, though it can be (unofficially) patched to fix the bug. This is really more of a blessing in disguise

I think in the original release the difficulties are all the same, so easy is just as hard as the highest difficulty level. That could be Terror from the Deep that did that, though!
