www.hardcoregaming101.net/freescape/freescape.htmThis was kind of the first 3D game "engine", in the sense that the framework was used in a multitude of games, and even opened up later with a construction tool. The games are rather very slow and limited, but quite interesting from a historical standpoint.

This is fantastic! I've always wanted a article or retrospective of these games. This kind of 3D is fascinating.
Also the music in Castle Masters is amazing

The "The Satellite Game" and "Cyberzone" links are missing a "www.". Really interesting stuff though.

The "The Satellite Game" and "Cyberzone" links are missing a "www.". Hmm, they shouldn't need it because they're on a subdomain. Do the links not work for you?

Those two links don't work for me too.
These games have not aged well but the better versions (I tried the PC ones of some of them years ago) show some details that were surprising at the time. Looking back of them, they are distant predecessors of what came later in terms of games with 3D exploration. I also agree that while Ovine's remakes are laudable efforts, they lose the original charm - and I'd have liked to see Dark Side remade anyway, as it sounds much more interesting. If someone managed to put some "modern" mouse patches into Freescape like they did with System Shock...

The Commodore 64 versions being the slowest is not surprising, since the C64 had a really slow main processor (1mhz) even compared to the other choices at the time. It doesn't really affect 2d games at all, but when polygon mapped games started appearing it was an obvious problem. Spectrum was actually better for 3d in comparison.
