Got no respect this gen. People took it as a kiddy system, but it had so many mature titles. The games that people said were kiddy were also on Xbox and PS2 (movie games, disney games, tv show games, barbie games etc.) I wish it could of gotten a little better respect, and it all out of no where died. RIP gamecube I will still purchase your awesome games till I grow old. Heres my GC game list for the hell of it: Animal Crossing James Bond Agent Under Fire Metroid Prime Legend of Zelda Wind Waker Resident Evil 0 Resident Evil Remake Resident Evil 4 Eternal Darkness Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door Killer7 Geist Baten Kaitos Star Fox Adventures Harry Poter Quiddich (my brothers) Games I need: ALL OF THEM!! My love for gamecube (March 06 - FOREVER)

I think N64 turned off so many people Nintendo was never able to win those folks back. Sort of like baseball's strike in '94 -- really damaged the game for a long time until McGwire and Sosa had the Home Run chase thing going in '98
That and the awkward controller which I just never got to gripes with, and I know I'm not alone.
Not a bad system though, of course not... but it's easy to see why it got lack of respect.

I think N64 turned off so many people Nintendo was never able to win those folks back. Hell, the N64 + PSX using CDs turned me off from console gaming until I bought a dreamcast during its final time in early 2001. I didn't get faith back in nintendo until I won a GC later that year. It's very probable I would not have gotten a GC unless I won one.

Know what my beef with the GC was? Not enough RPGs. Nearly every RPG I've played this gen has been on the PS2.
I really hope that more RPGs are released on the Wii. And none of that Lost Kingdoms BS, either.

I think there's a Custom Robo 2 which would be better. you're thinking of the N64. There is only one Custom Robo game for the Gamecube.

The irony is that Nintendo worked on fixing a lot of complaints people had about the N64 and, to varying extents, fixed the problems, yet it ultimately met with largely the same reception. The GameCube, in comparison to the N64, had more mature games, more RPGs, more fighters, had the games on discs, had a considerably larger library (and thus more frequent releases), and tended to have lower game MSRPs.
What's funny is that I personally still prefer the N64. Maybe in the nature of this site I just have a tendency to root for the underdog. I'll take Super Mario 64 over Sunshine, Ocarina of Time over Wind Waker, F-Zero X over GX. Plus there's all the stuff that the GameCube doesn't have like Goemon games just to name one example.

I'll take Super Mario 64 over Sunshine, Ocarina of Time over Wind Waker... Underdogs? Eh, I'd say that Sunshine and Wind Waker are quite the underdogs compared to their N64 predecessors. Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 are credited with revolutionizing their respective genres, while Sunshine has been largely accused of being derivative, among other things, and of course there is the whole controversy over Wind Waker's stylistic make-over, which some people still criticize to this day. Or, are you just speaking about each system as a whole, and not necessarily about individual titles?

Yeah, I meant the systems themselves and their libraries in general. Even if most people prefer Mario 64 over Sunshine and Ocarine of Time over Wind Waker, they still much prefer the GameCube in a general sense. A lot of people have the outlook that those two games are the only games on N64 that are any good and that the rest is just blurry, choppy trash that's completely unplayable these days. While I can't lie about certain limitations of the hardware (which PlayStation and Saturn weren't without either), I think there was a ton of innovation present on the N64 and plenty of gems. Out of the 70 or so N64 games I have, I think most are at least pretty good, and considering the N64 had a little under 300 games released, that's a respectable quality to crap ratio, which is far more than I can say about its major competition the PlayStation (which I have close to 200 games for and a whole bunch of stinkers).
With the GameCube, I think you really hit the nail on the head with your use of "derivative". I'd apply that to A LOT of GameCube games. While there are plenty of great games, few of them seem to really tread new ground to me.
