I think it would be a good way to discuss the series as a whole. Weird games. That and its Japanese popularity. Which is how Spelunker II was even a thing in the first place. That's a really good point - it's weird how some games from America got bigger in Japan than here.

Oh hey, Spelunker 2 actually looks like it might be a decent game. I had it confused with Super Pitfall for a minute there.

discuss the first Spelunker in all of its infamous one-block-fall-and-you-die splendor? Do mind, though, that Spelunker ends up getting a bad rap for that because most know it from the American NES version, which came out much too late for this kind of game (even the Famicom version came after Super Mario Bros., but still almost 2 years before the US). Back when the game was actually designed (the Apple II Atari 8-bit version came out in Fall 1983!), that mechanic was actually still kind of a genre standard, rooting all the way back to Donkey Kong.

When the original Spelunker first released it would have been really cool. The core platforming mechanics are very similar to Donkey Kong, but there are a lot of features beyond simply jumping over shit, and you explored a massive cave system rather than a bunch of single-screen stages.

The first Spelunker is actually an interesting game, just one that's a bit hard to appreciate by modern standards because it seems gruesomely difficult. But then... so were most platformers from the early eighties. Spelunker at least seems manageable compared to Monty on the Run.

Yeah. Seemed to be the case with some of Broderbund's games, as Lode Runner was (and still is) huge there. I think Choplifter was also popular there, although the only Japanese-developed versions were the arcade/Master System ones by Sega plus assorted ports by other companies. The sequels were all developed by Western ones. There's also Karateka, how could I forget that.

I'll go with Spelunker II, because Apshai is almost a roguelike, so I thought, and is way more time than I want to invest on my first GC game. I'd consider the other game, but I don't have a Playstation.

I just played some Spelunker II; WHAT HAVE I DONE!?!?!?!
I really hope that somehow Derby Stallion comes in from behind to win, because Spelunker II is really bad. And I LIKE the original Spelunker!

Same here, because Spelunker II is really just Famicom-era bullshit in comparison to the original. ...on a somewhat related matter, I find it interesting that the Spelunker Collection on PS3/Vita actually has the original computer version of Spelunker alongside the NES version, II and the arcade games. I think it's the first time M2's done something that's not console or arcade.

Yeah, I was gonna put a vote in on that one since I've been wanting to get in on one of the GC9Xs, but I gave it a quick spin and......dear god was it bad.

I'd played it years ago and apparently my memory is shot. I like the idea of the game, but attacking enemies is a complete bitch, and it's one of those games that penalizes you if you pick up useful items. Seriously, what the fuck.

I voted for Spelunker II. Why? Because the first game is one of those absurdly crap-tastic "gems", and I REALLY want to see how the sequel stands up. Maybe we could talk about the Irem arcade version, too...

...turns out that Spelunker Collection doesn't have Spelunker II. The Famicom one, that is.
My bad.

Ok, I'm able to beat the first boss, but I have no idea where to go from there; you get a crystal afterward - anyone have any idea what to do with it?
Oh! Hints!!!
The TOKU/HOLY stat builds up when you kill some enemies; it goes down if you kill deer (they're not hostile), or pick up item bags. In order to use the rosary weapon (which is the only way an Esper or Explorer can kill ghosts and zombies) you need to have a certain amount of TOKU/HOLY.
