Sadly I couldn't get any enjoyment whatsoever out of this game. It's not even the grinding that annoys me, it's the excruciatingly slow pace of the action, and insipid level design. After a few hours with the chaotic thrillride that is Broforce, jumping into Mercenary Kings just felt dull and boring.

I agree, this wasn't worth a full article, a 500-Word Indie at most.

Well I don't really see any reason it shouldn't have a article, quality of games never stopped games getting full length articles before, and this one is a game with a lot of potential and a lot of things to like, that sadly is let down by a number of flaws. All of which makes for a nice read.
I backed the game on Kickstarter, and while I don't regret doing so, I haven't really got much fun out of it, due to the glacial pace and grinding mentioned above and in the article. Still, the gorgeous presentation makes up for it.

Well, an action game being slow is a serious flaw. Liked the sprite artwork, it resembles Scott Pilgrim's a lot.
Speaking of Metal Slug clones, there is an IGS arcade game called Demon Front, which was recently added to MAME, which is worth taking a look.

Sadly, Demon Front kinda sucks. The spritework is gorgeous, but there's no thought or sense of pacing at all behind the level/boss design or enemy placement. It's more like NARC or Smash TV in that it just kind of chucks the kitchen sink at you and hopes that things fall into place (they never do). I would even take Metal Slug 4 over it.

I actually like GunForce II a bit more than Metal Slug, despite the overall more generic artwork. It just kinda hits the perfect note in between the fast pace and overall look and feel of a Contra-like game, and the spectacular destruction of what would become trademark for the Metal Slug series.

I always loved Robertson's spritework and wondered if one day I could play games with his distinctive style. Then Scott Pilgrim came and I was very satisfied with it. Now I was looking forward to Mercenary Kings but several reviews and your comments say that it's not really worth it... I'll wait until its price gets reduced again on Steam or if it's included in some bundle.

I would like to correct that actually "Mercenary kings is hybrid between Metal Slug and Monster Hunter" Many critics says the item grinding is tedious. But not for me. IMHO because i compare it with monster hunter which has (must) repetitive item grinding and slower pace of gameplay

Now that I found it in a bundle, I can say something about it: after about 20 hrs of gameplay I still don't know if I like it or not. The graphic/aural part is of course fantastic, the item finding is not as tedious as I feared, and the action part is good enough. On the other hand, I get bored of repeating the same levels again and again, all the stuff about elemental powers and the weight of the items affecting your speed bog the action down too much, and the mechanic of following the escaping bosses through the levels is bullshit. In general I think that there's too much emphasis on item crafting that ultimately doesn't change the gameplay too much, or at least I didn't find too many differences among the dozens of bullets and knives (I usually use only caustic bullets and electric knives). And what's the need for the cook and the stylists that craft you emblems? Maybe it would have worked better as a pure action game. Still, I love Tribute Games' aesthetics and I'm looking forward to their next releases.
