First thought: god these sprites are hideous... Oh! But, really How many games let you fight a shark! That's amazing, I need to get the MAME ROM for this! My only issue with this article is there is no roster. That's the reason I love this place for fighting games, getting to see all the colorful characters.

Preston Ajax, eh? Looks like Black Jack (the Tezuka character) on steroids. And Capriccio resembles, more than the real Xenomorph, the parody of it that Akira Toriyama drew in Dr. Slump: There are a few discrepancies in the names of characters between the article and the roster: Jigjid/Jig Jid Bartol Clemence Kleiber/Keliber Cappricio/Capriccio Punching wild animals in a 1 vs 1 beat-em-up sounds like fun

This tangent makes me wonder which game had man-on-animal violence first. Pitfall, Donkey Kong?

I asked a guy if I could do this in a video game once. files.g4tv.com/ImageDb3/266444_S/Mike-Haggar-Vs-Shark.jpgHe also pointed me to First Funky Fighter, but I think I enjoyed Fighting Layer more. By the way, this game is very fun and I'm glad that such an obscure gem is getting an article on HG101.

Odd that this article appears, as I just discovered the MAME Rom a few weeks ago! I have a big weakness for fighters from this era, and while I can't profess to be good at ANY of them, it doesn't stop me enjoying them! And Fighting Layer is now one of my faves. Especially with my Q4RAF Fight Stick, and some really nice CRT filters! The soundtrack is all kinds of amazing too, especially if you dig 90's era fighter soundtracks. It's up there with Virtua Fighter, Tobal No.2, Evil Zone and the Toshinden series when it comes to music!

This tangent makes me wonder which game had man-on-animal violence first. Pitfall, Donkey Kong? In Pitfall you cannot hurt a thing. In Donkey Kong it is technically violence, although it's enacted in such a bizarre and indirect manner it doesn't seem quite on the same level as punching a shark in the face. Anyway, Safari from 1977 would probably be the first.
