After years of... debating whether to play Chrono Trigger or not, I finally dived in a couple of days ago... Reason for the deabte.. Multiple endings in an RPG.. As someone with OCD about such things I know I'd want to see them all.... Didn't really want to invest god knows how many hours into trying to see them all..... But I finally relented to my urges and plugged it in! thought I'd go through it one way without a guide and see how I'd feel...
Gotta say I'm enjoying it so far!
Now!
Spoiler for those who haven't played it below.....
Just got to the end of time section and I'm being asked to leave someone behind.... Does this choice have an impact on what ending to I'd get?
Basically.. I want the.... 'best' ending first time through just in case I don't have the will/energy to do it again and I don't want to make the 'wrong' choice in what it feels to me as quite early in the game.
I've not looked at any guides, vids or any other resources on the web... Just kinda want your opinion really so would appreciate spoiler free responses

I don't know whether this final decision affects the ending or not, but I do know that after you beat the game with any of the two possible endings available in your first run, New Game+ is unlocked. Besides keeping your stats and equipment from your last playthrough, Chrono Trigger's NG+ also lets you travel to any of the game's eras right from the beggining, letting you trigger plot events in any order you want. This opens up several new endings, most of them being humorous, but if you're playing the PlayStation or DS versions you can get an all-new "true" ending, which also doubles as a prologue to Chrono Cross.
Happy gaming!

You have to "leave someone behind" because you can't have more than three characters in your party. You can switch later if you want. There is an Ending Guide in GameFAQs that I suggest you check out after you've finished the game so you know what to do during NG+. Chrono Trigger's NG+ also lets you travel to any of the game's eras right from the beggining. Not quite. You still have to follow the story.

That's not quite right. There are two or three endings on your first run maybe I'll explain below. I don't know if an optional character changes the ending that much or not, I always get him. But the big factor is...well I can't believe you've never heard this. Ummm near the end of 10,000 BC/Antiquity the second time something huge happens. You can either fix it, or leave it be. Leaving it be is the worst ending. The accepted best ending is fixing it, and getting the optional character. I'll put how to get him in a spoiler tag, it'll be pretty vague, but it might be a small spoiler, no names, but I can't get anymore vague without having no idea what your looking for, or less vague and spoiling it all. If you don't want to know how then you won't read it. Because I really don't know how you haven't had this whole game spoiled for you at this point. Near the end of the game, you'll meet someone you've known for a while. He offers you to get your revenge by fighting him, or you can offer him to join. Obviously pick join. Or not fight, I forget what the precise choice is
As for the other endings. The last boss can be fought at any time. If I'm not mistaken your at The End of Time, so you can fight him now. The bucket I think takes you to the fight. The Old Man warns you, so you can't accidentally do it. The thing about the other endings is that if you do the fight at certain times, then you haven't fixed certain issues in time, and that takes effect. The trick is, you really can't win on your first run until you beat the game. Because, the first form is a boss rush of a ton of bosses that you met in the story. Then he gets harder. So, good luck. New Game + however does give you another opportunity. If you go into the teleported that Lucca doesn't tell you, then you can fight the Final Boss right away and get the special secret ending, which isn't anything to do with the story.

Characters you leave behind don't affect the ending at all. The only things which affects the ending in the first playthrough is if you fight the optional battle in 10000 BC or not (refusing to fight gives you the extra character), and the method you approach the final boss. Even so, the change is minimal.
As for the thing you must fix in 10000 BC, the first time through it is not optional AFAIK.

No it totally is. Because like I said technically you can fight the last boss at any time after you reach The End of Time. And the story considers itself done after the part after that. And I was wrong there is one other ending you have to beat the game to get to.

Well it's cool that I didn't get to witness the 'true' ending in the PS/DS version because I don't acknowledge Chrono Cross at all.

Technically, isn't it 12,000 BC?

All typos begin with Nu and end with Nu. This is the truth! This is my belief!

Thank you all for your very helpful responses! I'm a bit of a Sega fanboy so my knowledge of Ninty stuff is cursory at best, hence not knowing, aside from the multiple endings that much about CT. Very nice to know that the NG+ lets you keep the equpment and Stats from your previous game.. That has incrased the liklihood for me to go through it again. I'm a grinder, I like to get my characters in RPGs to god-tier levels earlyish on, so removing the need to do that on each run is a major plus.

You must have had a hard time with Phantasy Star IV then, if you ever played that one

I never really play an NG+ file to far, it's kind of boring. But, I'm still not sure how you managed to not have this game spoiled for you. It's bleeding Chrono Trigger. Thats like not knowing Aeris dies, or Samus is a woman.
