EDIT: actually no, better standard than what I had here for "old school" -- does the game have display scrolling, or is action screen-by-screen Old school: Donkey Kong Galaga Monty on the Run Not old school: Contra Super Mario Bros. Xevious wait.....so defender isnt oldschool?moon patrol? interesting....... Yeah, I think there are some problems with defining "old-school" based on whether it has scrolling or not. Technically, Zelda would count as old-school by this definition.

I remember going to ClassicGaming.com in 2000 and seeing them refer to the SNES and Genesis as "classic" at the time. It seemed a bit premature, as the 16-bit generation was technically only one step removed from what was current in those days. Crazy how time flies. Now I'd say anything from the PS2 era on back would be classic.
Two systems back from the present is my basic rule of thumb.

I tend to refer to individual games as old-school. Especially in big series that have had shifts in style. Sonic, Castlevania, and Zelda for example. Kirby on the other hand not so much, because those games have been largely the same thing for 20 years. Final Fantasy 1,2, and 3 I may refer to as Old-School, because they are pretty different.

I agree because I was still using my SNES and NES in 2000, but SNES and SG were almost considered antiques by most people at that time. It probably had more to do with the advances in 3D graphics at the time. 2D sprites were devil's work.

I think I said before anything older than 10 years I'd consider old. Oldschool however? Games with limited lives, continues or checkpoints I guess. It gets to be complicated when you go into detailed analysis like breaking FPS games down into separate sub genre arguments we have had here before :-)
