Decided to have some fun with this, and made up a whole 20-track "name that tune" challenge video. I'm thinking of making this a regular thing, so let me know what you guys think of the format and such -- and also how many of the tracks you're able to guess, because let me tell you, I did not make it easy! Welcome to "Soundtrack Sleuth," a trivia challenge (emphasis on the word "challenge"!) designed to test your knowledge of video game, anime or other nerd culture soundtracks. The premise is simple: you'll be presented with short snippets of 20 tracks, and will be tasked with identifying what source each is from. These can include just about anything, common or obscure, and the snippets chosen aren't necessarily being played from the beginning, so you can't always rely on famous hooks or standout melodies to jog your memory. Answers will be revealed in the YouTube description for the next episode. This episode's theme: non-SquareSoft (nor modern Square Enix) battle themes from video games. I'm leaving out Square because, let's face it... that would make this way too easy. There is no pattern here, and absolutely anything is fair game. The only "rule" I'm following is that if I include music from any source that's not (and has never been) officially available in English at the time of this upload, it will be featured at the end of the list. There is no limit to the number of tracks I may include from non-English sources, however -- over half the songs could be from titles released only in Japan, or the entire list could represent titles available in English. This will vary from episode to episode based solely on my whims. How many are you able to figure out? Let's see just how hardcore (and hipster?) you are! -Tom

I really don't want to hijack this thread too badly, but I like the "string" challenges like this one, so I'm gonna give it a go. Answers in the spoiler... 01. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (standard boss battle theme) 02. ??? - Parodius of some type? 03. ??? 04. ??? 05. ??? - This almost gives me a Hitoshi Sakimoto feeling but the synth sounds too cheap... 06. ??? - Possibly an Ys game? 07. ??? - Something with robots in it, is all I can figure. 08. ??? 09. ??? 10. ??? - Definitely a Shin Megami Tensei game... 11. ??? - Another Ys (or Falcom) game likely... 12. ??? - Has the feeling of a Tales game for some reason. 13. ??? 14. ??? - Nice bass, though. 15. ??? 16. Legend of the Mystical Ninja. 17. ??? 18. ??? - Has a similar-sounding march drum sample to Front Mission 4, though...but you said no Square. 19. ??? - Feels like Lufia 2, but the samples sound wrong... 20. ???
I guess I admit defeat.

Your guess on the composer for #5 is correct. Your guess for #10 is also on the right track, and technically your comment on #7 is correct (though that's not at all helpful in figuring out the game). Your other comments are off track -- there are actually no Ys games present on this list, and while Falcom does have some representation, neither of the tracks you guessed as Ys are Falcom tracks. -Tom

All I could recognise was the first one, and number 16 ;_; Although 12 must be something by Kenji Itō and has an obvious Saga style – but I don’t recogise it, which is odd as I have cleared most Saga games. maybe from the DS remakes? Pretty sad... Some seemed vaguely familiar, though, but not enough for me to put a finger on them. Also, as interesting as this is, I’d recommend moving it to a different thread, as it’ll get pretty confusing to focus on two parallel quizzes at the same time. As for the actual question, I have no idea.

I just posted here because the topic seemed apropos -- I didn't read anything leading up to it. Sorry to intrude! If you guys really do want me to move this, let me know. (Incidentally, your guess is correct on the composer for #12. Just remember, he's done plenty outside of that series too...) -Tom

I know track #10, and I have a hunch for 1 & 20. #1 is from a 90s sonic game. #10 is a battle theme from SMT: Digital Devil Saga. #20 sounds like a Fire Emblem tune. I have no idea what the current tune posted is though. It sounds like a game from the Game Boy Color.

Nope no clue. Hint please?
Also wyrdwad i like the look of your quiz style and would enjoy doing stuff like that too on the forum, but yeah this isn't really the place for it. If you make it it's own thread though, that would be awesome.

<spoiler>
#1 is from Sonic 2! #12 sounds like something from a SaGa game perhaps? #14 could be something Seiken Densetsu but I'm not sure... #15 is Battletoads? Or Battletoads & Double Dragon? #16 is Legend of the Mystical Ninja. #17 is Equinox. #19 sounds like Lufia but I could be wrong...</spoiler>

You only got the 16-bit tracks, but you got all four of them, which is pretty impressive -- you're the first person to correctly identify numbers 15 and 17 (and I'm giving you 15, even though you didn't identify the exact game, simply because you guessed the right series. The song is from the SNES version, which was titled as noted in the spoiler tag below.) Battletoads in Battlemaniacs -Tom

Not going to go hunting for the ones I'm unfamiliar with, so let's just get the ones out of the way that I think I am. Holy Crap! I know #12! #12 : Monster Kingdom Jewel Summoner Battle Theme And though I don't know exactly WHICH theme, #10 sounds like it's from Digital Devil Saga 1 And #19 is 7th Dragon

Correct on all three -- and both 12 and 19 were toughies, so good job! There are only three left that no one has correctly identified: 5, 13 and 18. I'm not surprised on 5 and 18, as both are ludicrously unfair on my part, but I am surprised no one's gotten 13 yet. Here are the hints I gave for these three tracks on the XSEED forum: If I used the main battle theme for track 5, I'm guessing it would've been identified by now, but I decided to be mean and used the final battle theme instead. Originally, this game had no soundtrack release at all, and no one was even certain it would get one, but it eventually did -- likely because it is a Hitoshi Sakimoto + Basiscape soundtrack, and is occasionally regarded as one of Basiscape's best. Too bad the game itself wasn't a bigger hit, because it definitely deserved to be.
For 13, the soundtrack to this PS2 cult classic was originally very rare and hard to find due to its limited printing in Japan, so copies of it would regularly go for $50 or more... but the soundtrack was pretty highly-regarded back in the early 2000s, and for good reason, so those who shelled out the cash for it generally thought of it as well worth the money, myself included.
And for 18, most battle themes throughout this long-running series are either really cutesy and whimsical, or kind of techno/house for some reason. The former style is more fitting to the overall atmosphere of the series. This particular track just always stood out to me because it's so... weird, and creepy. Much weirder and creepier than you'd expect, yet it really does work well as a boss theme, and made a very mediocre game (the fourth or fifth in the franchise, depending on whether or not you count one of them as a proper canonical sequel or a gaiden) a little more interesting every time it came on. -Tom

Taking another stab at 18 - Dawn of Mana/Children of Mana/Heroes of Mana?
For the Basiscape one, I went through their discography and still have no idea.

Nope! It's non-SquareSoft/Square Enix, remember, so that would be disqualified from the get-go.
