You can't go back anytime you want to try again like with the warp zones once you unlock those. Go left from world 1-1 to access the minus level. I'm not a big fan of the fans (hur hur hur) either, they're gone after world 2 I believe though. I actually did finish the game, it feels very satisfying when you do. The bonus levels though? Jesus. Impossible.

I kind of gave up on Super Meat Boy after a little while when it seemed like I wasn't quite going to make it with keyboard controls, and I didn't have a suitable D-pad handy.
I was particularly frustrated when I found the first secret character – Jill, I think it was – and found it somewhat upsetting that suddenly there were going to be a whole mess of extra characters with differing abilities and that some things were ultimately going to be much easier with certain characters and it was going to be futile trying to do those things with the wrong character.

In general tho, Meat Boy is basically always the best choice. It's kind of like the weapons in TF2: the defaults are usually the best for situations, but the bonus weapons provide a interesting spin.
