Curious if there's many new independent games like this or ones from the past I haven't heard of yet.
Castlevania series Ghosts N Goblins/Ghouls series, Demon's Crest Splatterhouse series Altered Beast Mystic Defender Chakan

Define horror........just the theme? Or survival/horror? 2D indie "horror" games i can think of right now: Home, scary and excellent example of how gameplay can change narration. Limbo, esp at the beginning scary, later becomes to puzzely for my liking. Lakeview Cabin,it's a Flash game but it is SO awesome. Just play it. without reading to much about it.

I guess just the sort of monstery stuff with typical horror settings. But go broader than that if you really want to.

For something much older, there's Forbidden Forest and its sequel, Beyond Forbidden Forest, for C64.

Surprisinly, noone brought up Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Youkai Kurabu Monster in My Pocket Monster Party

I was just about to mention Majyuuou, but it's already done. Really great, dark action game.
There's also SETA's Musya, which is subtitled "The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror" for the SFC/SNES...
