It's a sad fate to see old, beloved japanese companies which used to still make great games for consoles, computers and/or arcades until few years ago when they decided to move and focus at the mobile phone games market only. Taito and Cave two examples for me with the first one's last console game being Bust-a-Move Universe for 3DS which wasn't even developed from them but from Ariko and I have heard it's very disappointing for a retail game (at least Space Bust-a-Move for DS was a great game). Sunsoft is also another example but not so famous since their games are for Japan only and since they have been very inactive at the console market (I don't know about the computer market) for years (their last work was Blaster Master: Overdrive for WiiWare at 2010) it's quite understandable to see them making mobile phone games only. And seeing how SNK Playmore focuses so much at the mobile phone games market now (and some digital re-releases of older games here and there like in Steam) without any certain plans for new console games (maybe a new KOF but that's all) I'm afraid that they will follow the same road.

I don't have any definitive proof, but its my understanding that the mobile market in Japan is a fairly lucrative one. So I would think that it is a smart business move to focus there rather than make console games.

I don't have any definitive proof, but its my understanding that the mobile market in Japan is a fairly lucrative one. It's true, I have heard from many sources about that. So I would think that it is a smart business move to focus there rather than make console games. Depends on the company. If you have a company (expecially a small one) who doesn't make so good sales at consoles, it's the proper choice. But if you have a big company with lots of customers that still support strongly your console games like Nintendo, Sega, SquareEnix, Capcom etc to mainly focus at a market like smartphone games is an incredibly dumb move, expecially if your games aren't that good or sell like crap (Ahem! Ahem! Capcom...). The smart business move for companies like that is to support both markets, console and smartphone. And fortunately companies like Sega and SquareEnix do it right putting aside the quality of some of their smartphone games (expecially due to compability issues, a huge problem at smartphone games).

Always found it odd that Japanese gamers, who always preferred physical media, would engulf themselves in mobile gaming. Many games will get lost forever because of this.

It isn't too surprising after years of shrinkage in the traditional console/handheld space. There's sort of a generation gap between the hardcore fans who buy physical product and the younger masses who've taken to F2P mobile games.
One thing's certain though - the potential for a huge gaming market never disappeared. It was merely the industry's failure to rope in new customers as old ones dropped out (basically, aging designers have been making games that stopped resonating with the target audiences long ago. On the other hand, the mobile games business is dominated by young creators in their 20s and early 30s).

Bust-a-Move Universe for 3DS has to be the worst game in the series and heres why. .Very little animation bub don't even react to losing a stage. .No one is playable except bub every stage has you rescuing just a different colored bubble dragon. .You have a marker point all way though puzzle mode. .no split routes at all just under 100 stages. .Boss fights are worse than in galaxy and just end after a min and no way to retry them without playing entire 10 stages before it. . No challenge collecting the bonus items and all they do is give you more time on the bosses which do not effect the ending anyway. . Every stage is just a remixed version of the first games only music. . A 3 min 5 min and unlimited score rush survival mode is only way to play game without the marker. .Puzzle and Score rush mode are the only modes in the game no VS or multiplayer of any kind. .New power ups seem pointless.
I beat the game in under 4 hours and aside from getting in game medals they is nothing else to do in the game. I feel ripped off paying £4 for it used can't image how bad I feel if I payed any more. What a terrible way for the series on consoles to end.

I feel ripped off paying £4 for it used Wow. Is it that bad? And I was thinking to pick it up if I find it used at a reasonable price as a Puzzle Bobble diehard fan. LINE Bust a Move is ever worse (copy-paste from General Game Chat Thread): After making format to my smartphone and installing CyanogenMod I decided to give it another game to games that previously I couldn't play. One of them was LINE Puzzle Bobble. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.naver.SJLGPB&hl=el Months ago I bitched about it for being F2P and having compability issues (just like many other smartphone games). But I decided to give it a chance. It can't be that bad, right? But no: it was crap after all.You must create an account at LINE in order to play it, you must be online (which is dumb for a puzzle game like Puzzle Bobble), you have 5 hearts only (each heart spent per stage), the controls are not so convenient (how did they fucked up with controls for a puzzle game like that is a mystery), the loading times are too big for a puzzle game of its kind, the gameplay is boring...In few words? Worst Puzzle Bobble game ever. Fuck this shit! I will download Bust-a-Move Millennium instead for Game Boy Color emulator at my smartphone. 1 star rating from me at Google Play. Fuck you Taito! Fuck you LINE!

Tatio seemed to have gone way downhill on all of their classic series though or did weird things with them. Bubble Bobble : Last game in series which was on DS was sold everywhere except japan. They never did make a real Bubble Bobble 3 either. The psp game is the worst one it is full of so many bad ideas and long loading times. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5AQc4mGTjURainbow Island. The last two games was a total mess which was on psp and xbla. The DS one was not a total mess and best of the last three games. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNHH2YK13-cPsp version and only video footage of it outhere. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULCGiikP-1IXbla version. Space Invaders seems to get treated better than the above two. Though Space Raiders/Space Invaders Invasion day showed up on both zooming games tv and screw attacks top worst reboots at number one despite not begin that crap nor a reboot and both list had Sonic 06 bellow it. Though Space invaders revolution has to be the worst version of a classic game I have ever spent money on. Its so bad the they just use the not that good looking even for the time CG cutscenes for all screen shots on the back of the box. I mean look at this crap every stage looks identical has stupid rules and yes that is the real soundtrack its the only good thing about the game. All of Tatio psp remakes of games was terrible except the ones on Tatio legends reloaded the new version of Camel try on that is pretty good. I cant really say much bad about Kemco. I got over 20 hours out of Band of monsters their dragon quest monster clone which was free for a limited time. They even bothered with side quest after the main story was complete though the difficulty in the game does seem a tad to high in places and all those damns and bastards felt really out of place.

The last time that Taito made a great Bubble Bobble game was in 1996 with Bubble Memories.
As about Darius I always found it a weird choice for their last game, Dariusburst, to be released at PSP from all consoles instead of Xbox360 where shmups were more appreciated. And the Android version is still Japan only.

The iOS version isn't, plus it also got a release in Japanese arcades, which follows the classic Darius tradition of having a HUGE triple monitor, except now it's all widescreen with full HD.

Another weird thing about all the 360 Tatio games is the first few was Wii ware ports. All they did to the puzzle bobble xbla version was add avatar support in it and online multiplayer which was dead in a few weeks and you can see the place they shoved the avatars in was poorly placed. Qix++ had a pointless online multiplayer mode and had one mode locked behind a DLC unlock key yet it is still in the how to play section though said nothing about it begin DLC. Though the same game has a Retail PSP version just for Japan only. Raystorm HD had the worst demo ever it only gives you first half of stage 1 and Tatio download games not called Space Invaders never go on sale ever. Though why did Raystorm get a remake G Darius would of been a better choice.

What's the name of an old arcade game from Taito that got a DS sequel and localized in Europe by 505 Games? Althought many people talk negatively about it I actually liked it. I know but I don't have an iPhone/iPad/iSuck and I never intend to buy one just to play games. ...plus it also got a release in Japanese arcades, which follows the classic Darius tradition of having a HUGE triple monitor, except now it's all widescreen with full HD. That's one more reason to make me wonder why not releasing it at consoles as well since they bothered to make an arcade port.

That DS game could be Labyrinth/Mawashite Koron The DS camel try game or possibly Turn It Around/Mawasunda!!. Which was a direct port of a 2000 arcade game so predated mini game series wario ware. That game it self got a Wii remake called furu furu park which sadly had less mini games and edited some of the mini games out side japan though no edits was in the DS version. Furu Furu park was announced for Europe but 505 games never brought it out yet did the DS version. Both versions get way to much hate though.
